Speaking of which...

There once was a man named Gold Roger, who was King of the Pirates

He had fame, power, and wealth beyond your wildest dreams!

Before they hung him from the gallows, these were the final words he said:

"My fortune is yours for the taking, but you'll have to find it first
I left everything I own in One Piece..."

Ever since, pirates from all over the world set sail for the Grand Line, searching for One Piece;

The treasure that would make their dreams come true!

YO!
Ya-yo, ya-yo!

Dreamin'! Don't give it up, Luffy!
Dreamin'! Don't give it up, Zolo!
Dreamin'! Don't give it up, Nami!
Dreamin'!
Don't give it, give it up, give it up, give it up
Give it up, give it up, give it up, give it UP!

Here's how the story goes, we find out
'bout a treasure in the Grand Line, there's no doubt
The pirate whose eye is on it, he'll sing
I'll be King of the Pirates, I'm gonna be King!

Ya-yo, ya-yo, ya-yo... oh-ho!

His name is Luffy!
That's Monkey D. Luffy!
Gonna be king of the pirates!
He's made of rubber!
How did that happen?
Yo-ho-ho, he took a bite of Gum Gum!

Ya-yo, ya-yo!

His name's Zolo, he's just like a samurai
And a L-A-D-Y, Nami's not shy
Usopp's doin' that marksman thing
Sanji's cookin', Chopper's doctoring!

Ya-yo, ya-yo, ya-yo, oh-ho!

Set sail for One Piece!
It's the name of the treasure
In the Grand Line!
Ya-yo, ya-yo...

Set sail for ONE PIECE!

Babish is taking a month hiatus (there will still be videos), and there already hasn’t been a proper Binging in like a month.

It’s weird how the channel just kept exploding in growth and then suddenly crashed (well, “crashed” in that just a year ago he was averaging 3 million views a video, now around one million). I imagine the twice weekly schedule was not sustainable, and then additional videos with additional people hosting their own videos. He’s just burnt out.

I've been skipping his videos for a while now because the thing that originally attracted me to the channel (Dork making food from movies and tv shows) has largely vanished under the weight of whatever Basics with Babish is supposed to be and introducing everyone to all his staff and food youtube friends who can't support a channel on their own. I feel like he's sort of lost touch with the fun of trying to make things and been too enamored with trying to be 'upscale' for lack of a better word.

I'll admit I did stop watching him regularly while back, but it had less to do with him than it did a growing disinterest in cooking videos as a whole. I think the only cooking-related videos I'll watch immediately when they pop up in my sub feed are You Suck At Cooking and Uncle Roger videos, and even then I'm enjoying those less because YouTube is overall getting less enjoyable to watch stuff on

Yea I like Babish a lot but watching his old videos a bit ago made me realize he's gone pretty far from what originally sold the channel to me. It's not BAD, and I really like Alvin's stuff on it and all, but yea it feels like somewhere along the line he decided once he got so popular he needed to be more 'serious' and it's just kinda...eh. He's a good cook, he has good tips and all, but there's only so many times I can watch a dude make white sandwich bread because recreating the Blunky Bloopkle Triple Delux sandwich from whatever cartoon's on now requires only the freshest made things.

One of my favorite old Babish episodes was him trying to make some tomato dessert from The West Wing and watching him realize that literally no part of it worked right and probably just sounded good in the script; a perfect metaphor for The West Wing itself.

I think part of it is that he had a very aggressive schedule with weekly videos, and there’s only so many wacky food stuff items you can make before you’re repeating yourself. Which is why fancy versions were needed to keep the video interesting, because how many times can a dude make a burger? The basics videos, while good, don’t help since an increasing number of his regular videos are just “How make X” since the movie or show was just a type of steak or baked good with no frills or spin besides being a bit more fancy than normal. So he’s cannibalizing content.

And for me it’s less him being serious and just an increasing number of videos being a half hour of trying to be funny with his crew? I don’t need like, Super Serious Chef Videos, but it all feels forced and wasn’t particularly funny AND the cooking content suffers. I mean, I get it, after five years you wanna do more than remake Dagwood sandwiches.

The biggest decline in babish imo is that at some point the ratio of “funny man makes food from movies” and “andrew rea, YouTube sensation, talks about food with his famous friends” tipped perilously in the wrong direction. If I want to see jon favreau talk about pasta or lava cakes I’m just going to watch Chef again

Yeah, his gimmick has a built-in lifespan so it makes perfect sense that he'd want to pivot over time but nothing he's tried to transition into has the same appeal as that original gimmick.

Edit: But, I mean, his net worth is in the millions now, right? So he can probably ease up on the hustle 'n grind for a bit.

Linkara dropped a complete analog horror series for April Fools Day and it's actually pretty good? There's a short bit of terrible acting in the first episode, but the rest is surprisingly well done for a no budget thing done by a bunch of friends/colleagues. I recommend it if you're into analog horror.

I wish youtube made it easier for people to post once in a blue moon and have some level of success. A lot of the best creators are people who publish something maybe once every few months, because it lets them wait until they have something interesting to say, and make sure it's thoroughly researched and polished. It's always exciting to look at my subscription page and be like, "Holy poo poo, it's that guy! I forgot about him! What's he got to say?"

Meanwhile the subs that post daily or multiple times a week I just feel burnt out from and never catch up on because there's just too much.

JA said on stream last year that once he finally gets the Witcher 3 video out and also I think a Cyberpunk video that he plans to semi-retire from Youtube. Partly because of what you mentioned, and also because he says dealing with almost daily DMCA bullshit on his videos completely burned him out. Also he lives in Canada and apparently collecting income from Youtube is a clusterfuck because there's a bunch of tax and exchange implications that Google offers exactly zero help with.

I'm surprised he put out an Elden Ring video but I hope actually getting a video done and out the door did something to ease his stress. The Witcher video seemed to be really loving with his mental health.

YouTube is not set up for sporadic videos, it’s anathema to their goal of shoving as many ads down your eyeholes as possible, so your other option is Patreon. However, a lot of people quickly discover that a per-video patreon is not sustainable unless you are making a lot per video or basically uploading as much as YouTube would want you to.

So if you want to make a living off your content, then you need to go monthly and pray people don’t drop-off in large numbers between videos along with the gains from each video making up for the prior loss. Stop Skeletons From Fighting had a dedicated YouTube video when they made the switch, explaining why they need time to make good content and how per-video can’t work. They’re getting like five grand a month now, which is great, but it’s not the norm.

I kind of worry that Adam Ragusea is going down the same rabbit hole. Now he's got a podcast (well, he had a stupid nerd podcast before, but now it's a Food Podcast that's also on his YouTube channel, podcasts aren't on YouTube, don't @ me) and he has branded knives and it isn't even that much more stuff out of him--but it's enough to be exhausting.

Not his fault, the content grind is a real thing and alternate content streams are important for the health of his channel (and thus feeding his family etcetera etcetera), but I just don't want to watch it, and that makes it so YouTube thinks I don't want to watch anything on his channel.
