I remember getting a sinking feeling when I saw that Travis Willingham on Critical Role had Norse runes tattooed on his arm, but it turns out they spell “WORTHY” because he voices Thor. So, one exception.

Eh, depends. I've got a bunch of Scandinavian friends who are into paganism and the occult and they're all both tatted up in runes and other symbols and also staunch anti-fascists, anti-white supremacists, etc. In short, they don't want the fash co-opting their culture so they just leaned hard into it and being both loudly queer and anti-fash. They all also actually live in Norway and poo poo so if you see some dipshits in Knoxville rocking Mjolnir tattoos you can safely assume they're racist

I'm not pagan but I do live in Norway and have a fair number of pagans and they are all lefty antiracists and often queer as well.

Mind you, I wouldn't probably have any of the other sort in my extended circle anyway.

I re-watched 3 Days of the Condor, which I've not seen since I was a teenager and oh boy, those 1970s vibes haven't all aged well.

Robert Redford's character coerces his hostage Faye Dunaway into sex at gunpoint while she's still partially tied up (although she's partway to falling for him as happens in films where a Handsome Protagonists holds someone at gunpoint or ties them up) and the music certainly gets all romantic, but afterwards she makes very clear she wasn't fully willing. But she still likes him, of course.

There's a scene where he's asking a group of people if someone can help break into a car and turns to the black guy in the group and says "surely you've broken into a car before?" and sure maybe it's coincidence that's who he turned to.

Then there's the whole setup which is that he works for the CIA and somehow doesn't know that the CIA are murderous loons hell-bent on being Extremely Bad People (and that some people in the CIA might not be as bad). Also, the film features a fictional CIA office in the World Trade Center and after 9/11 it turned out there really was a CIA office there.

It's still a great film, but very of its time.

This just reminded me of the first time I saw Blade Runner: The Final Cut, last year I think? The whole "love scene" between Harrison Ford and Sean Young has this sexy sax piece playing that really doesn't seem to fit what's actually going on between them and the whole thing just kinda skeeved me out a little. Like I get that they're both probably robots just trying to navigate human emotions, which makes sense in the context of the film, but the whole "stopping a woman from leaving your apartment and telling her how she should be feeling/what she should do while she's clearly in distress" scenario isn't great

A good chunk of that is that scene actually i just think it loses something pretty significant if Roy Batty is talking to another replicant

I always thought that, despite the music, that scene is supposed to be uncomfortable. The movie kind of plays around with the idea that Batty isn't as villainous as he appears and in the same way argues that Deckard isn't as heroic as he's set-up to be. In the end, maybe Batty was the real hero, a tragic one, and Deckard is a cruel extension of an evil system.

But then I guess the sequel says that Deckard and Rachel were a glorious love story and so very important that now everything in the universe revolves around them loving.

are the same thing!

Deckard is a violent creep who learns that replicants are also people. The sequel undermines that by making him some big hero.

Him being a replicant himself or not doesn't matter because the entire point is that there is no actual difference between replicants and humans other than class.

Goddamn, we’re nothing but topical here.

The point of the rapey scene in Bladerunner is that i can’t do this, the opinion I had for 30 years collapses faced with the reality of rape, especially as a power action against a disadvantaged minority.

Bladerunner is basically the story of how somebody comes to participate in a genocide, and it’s a mix of him being a violent creep and also somebody totally at the mercy of a horrible system that exploits him. He is fundamentally of the same class as the replicants, in that they’re all the proletariat.

That’s insofar as the plot matters. I think it’s a vibe more than a story, most interested in serving up this perfect grimy feeling through a meticulously created series of tableaux. That opening shot of cars flying in front of burning smokestacks and a hellish cityscape that just lets Vangelis play is the entire movie, basically.

it's this, the story is about how the powerful and systems of power can turn the lower classes into their instruments. Deckard is a violent creep and that helps him but the system is designed to reward him for being a violent creep to the correct targets. Him being a human or not is beside the point, replicants are the same as people and can be exploited like people, the powers above Deckard don't genuinely give a poo poo if he's human or not, either way he's an instrument of violence and oppression. He perceives himself through the lens that benefits him the most and that's the best way to view him as an audience imo. When he's chasing down robots he's a human fighting lower class machines who need to learn their place, when he's forcing himself on a replicant woman maybe he's just another robot and they're all just figurin it out. Like you said it's more a vibe than a story at times and the vibe around Deckard is 'you're a broken piece of poo poo that the system created because that's the only way you're useful, it's not great that you seem to enjoy being that broken piece of poo poo but there's a bigger rot than just you'.

One particularly amusing one I recall was a couple going at it doggy style when one cat suddenly jumps up to a night stand and just stares at the wall.
