That is in fact hyperbole to the point of hysteria. The Nazis executed well over 10 million people. I don't think any estimate of Ukrainian civilian/POW deaths even hits 10k. That's three orders of magnitude off.

They’re qualitative Nazi war crimes, but given time they might reach quantitative levels.

I gotta say those Russian conscripts are doing a bad job of making the Russian people seem like someone I should feel bad for.

I know war makes people act lovely, but this seems far beyond that, and conscription system makes sure we get what should be a representative sample of the common people of the nation, so its not like here were there is some level of seeking it.

I'm sure the survivors in Bucha, Mariupol and Irpin aren't going to make the distinction. We have that insane "denazification" article being run in state-run Russian media which is basically calling for genocide, so I don't think it's a hysteric point to make at all even if they aren't approaching Hitler's high score.

That and with 80 years to develop technology to make the atrocities much more readily known to the world, I don't think you're going to see someone exterminate 10 million people over a short period of time without major consequences.

This is probably as extreme as it gets in the 21st century and the analogy fits.

China is so far waffling but increasingly willing to back Russia. India likewise but I bet if China goes all-in on Russia then they'll realign back to the US. Surprisingly, Vietnam just voted today at the UN against censuring Russia, so they might be part of that too. If Russia ramps the war crimes up even more (they're going to) and/or if they actually use a WMD then we might see some re-realignment, but at the moment it looks like what it comes down to is that some countries see the current US/European-led global systems as worse than letting Russia have free rein in Ukraine and this is one of the turnpoints in history where they have to pick one or the other. I think if the war just kind of peters out and Putin stays in power, in a couple of years China will be the shot-caller of the bloc that comes out of this that includes Russia and some other countries.

Not in russia. Russia has selective conscription system and since nobody wants in (the benefits Arent like in the US Army, and hazing and abuse is horrible) the conscription In russia is WAY overrepresenting the poorest and least educated who have least chances to wiggle themselves out of it.

You don't have to beat the Nazis high score to be considered a genocidal attempt at outright warcrimes, but I do love that Russia full on brought mobile crematoriums in a very :godwin: moment.

Its safe to say at this point that mass war crimes were entirely part of the plan and it very much mirrors what the Nazis did to multiple nations, but especially the Ukrainians, Poles, and Russians.

Even the existence of the mobile crematoriums imply that they thought corpses belonging to someone would be in such great supply that they’d need a mobile way of dealing with them.

They weren’t expecting heavy fighting either, and those two observations put together go straight into :gonk: territory.

And given that they did not foresee a long, drawn out engagement, they fully expected those corpses to NOT be Russian.

Also one of the politicians that ended up in prison got shredded on BBC's HARDTalk, it was hilarious. He waltzed in thinking the interviewer would be kind and a captive audience and that about sums up the political ken of the leadership.

Also hilarious (in a sad way) was the Spanish police officers that trashed a bar in 2017 because the waiters were speaking Catalan. Except they were Italian and speaking Italian. And the police then accused the bar of stealing their phones. And one of them was in command of 250 anti riot officers.
