echinopsis posted:what do you use this for? is it a standalone thing? it is standalone, not sure what you use it for though. it does have insanely fast physics engines but its also not documented how to export scenes with baked data, ive been working out how to get a vdb output workflow going and it just feels like its not really supported. you can render in omniverse itself, and the renderer is super loving fast, but the shader model is very limited. just feels like theyre releasing like blender 1.1 or houdini 5 when the real blender and houdini have moved way way beyond that point. i guess the workflow is make a bunch of models or a scene in blender/maya/whatever, export to USD format (pixar is pushing this to be industry standard going forward), import to omniverse, set up your scene, run simulations, and then render in omniverse and postprocess in nuke. so its trying to fit in where houdini is, plus a fast renderer. only problem is houdini is a million times more capable at this point and there are a ton of fast capable renderers out there. e: also they treat it like a beta product, a lot of the official documentation from like 5 months ago is outdated and hard to even follow because the interface has changed a lot Jenny Agutter fucked around with this message at 00:54 on Mar 25, 2022 |

yeah same lol nice render man! i’m sure ive spammed this before but here’s my blocks falling down engine that also has a “radiation engine” that i made that spreads colours around. real time in ue4 https://youtu.be/POQ3eoat9eI

Those are some very nicely colored blocks..so is it a big difference to make stuff in ue compared to blender? Or can you easily import models and effects?

I reckon the initial part of the learning curve is very steep, there’s a lot to get your head around to get basic poo poo working, but once you’ve kind of got that, then progress is quite easy, I reckon, and you can create complexity quite quickly because unlike blender which is evaluating node graphs, ue4 is executing programs each of those blocks was an object that carried variables that defined its colour and energy and each frame it would send out tracers, and if a tracer hit another block it would transfer some energy, attempting to simulate radiation except I had three channels of radiation, RGB, which spread independently, so you’d get the colours evening out over time, and then I had a button I would push that would energise a random block to keep it interesting

also it was hard to see on my phone but you can definitely see the effect, there's a rainbow that sweeps across the prism at certain points

haven’t actually had much of a play to see what it can do tbh, I just noticed I had left blender open since the last time and decided to add a few things in and dial in a rainbow, but I am quite curious to see what welds I can do with it. tbh I have mostly explored what i’ve wanted to do with dispersion in luxrender, but it is interesting to see what’s possible in blender. it’s the kind of thing I’d add into my default file so I could add it as a group to anything even remotely transparent

Animation update for March is gonna be a small one because it's a lot of polish and exaggeration of the basic animations I put down but man is it coming along well. I'm almost done with the first fifth of it and being able to loosen things up and get goofy has been a ton of fun. I won't upload footage of the scene because I want to get more done before I show it off again, but a large part of the month involved redoing my character's model and undoing a bunch of technical spaghetti half-measures I did because I didn't know how to animate well this time last year. Here's two videos I made for my social media pals to explain just how fuckadoo the model was: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXsP4cFvfgQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlpohX_DhRE Enjoy the horrific thumbnails I also bought this book And holy poo poo is it just fantastic. Immediate recommendation to anyone who wants to learn animation

Nodespeople, I require your aid once again How could I create something like that pattern on the sail there? Shimmering hexagons type deal. Doesn't necessarily need to animate since I'm not sure I'll be able to use that, though it wouldn't hurt. Doesn't need to match that exactly either, just the same kind of vibe. e: Actually this is one of those cases where I immediately get ideas as soon as I ask the question. Hexagon image, various optionally moving procedural cloud textures on it? Elukka fucked around with this message at 00:28 on Apr 8, 2022 |

Elukka posted:Nodespeople, I require your aid once again Here's a good start on the hex shape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wN8EA-lZugw Probably just hook that into an emission shader, with an invert node to get the lines to be white. For the shimmer, you want a math node, set to multiply, just before it goes into the emission shader. Then have the hex pattern for the first input and the texture you want for the shimmer as the second. Use a map range node or a colorramp to fine tune the shimmer pattern. Add a texture coordinate and mapping node before the shimmer texture. Use the object coordinate and plug that into the mapping node. Add a combine XYZ node to the location node of the mapping node. Adjust each axis a bit to decide which direction you want the shimmer to go. This is how you can make the shimmer move. If you don't want to manually keyframe the animation, you can type in #frame/10 (You can straight up type math functions into blender fields, btw.) or whatever to make the location be controlled by what frame the animation is at. 10 can be replaced by whatever number you want. EDIT: Actually this is mostly wrong and I'm gonna need to fiddle with things. EDIT 2: Here's what I ended up with. Replace those top three shapes with the hex shape from the tutorial above and fiddle with the settings until you get what you want: Edit 3: Oh yeah, you're gonna have to switch to cycles to get this to look right. Edit 4: Here's rendered animation for the above nodes: https://i.imgur.com/zvHebbs.mp4 Edit 5: Bump up the multiply number to 10 and the subtract node to .01 and it's pretty much there exactly, with the little bit of shield transparency in the grid. I might add the hex shapes and do a render later. Bluemillion fucked around with this message at 15:13 on Apr 8, 2022 |
