like Cowboy Bebop, VHD was only super popular in the US. it was one of the four anime titles that was selected to be at every Blockbuster Video in the country in 1997. Bloodlust was made primarily for the US market (it even got a US theatrical release in like September 2003! shout out to the Inwood Theater in Dallas. i didn’t have a car yet and had to call a cab lol)

I checked and was surprised that it doesn’t seem like he worked on Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust just because the style seems so similar. (Amani did the cover art of the light novels, but the moves aren’t exactly that style, even if pretty much every interpretation of D is basically just Amani’s D).

Though speaking of VHD, I’m surprised there haven’t been more animated adaptations. The setting is basically sci-fi horror western, so you can do pretty much anything with it.

Edit:

Probably for the best. Steven King also had a near miss and rushed to finish the Dark Tower novels and there is a very noticeable, very huge drop in quality afterwards.

I've been rereading them and imo other than the boring new england shenanigans the weird final dark tower books are pretty great.

Book 2 and 3 are still probably best but holy poo poo Susannah Dean does not hold up in 2022.

Oh poo poo I completely forgot about that. Good grief King! I’m not sure how that poo poo made it past the publisher, those first few novels aren’t that old.

I didn’t appreciate how many blatant references to other pieces of media there were. It was kind of cool in the first few books how there were hints that it was connected to other King stories, but the later books just outright had Marvel and Harry Potter poo poo in it. Plus King’s self insertion.

Anyone know if the second season of 86 is worth watching?

IIRC there have been several attempts to do a Vampire Hunter D series but they've either languished in development hell or just straight up didn't pan out

It really sucks because it seems like it should be a slam dunk

if i recall correctly the two stories that were adapted were pretty much the only ones of decent length. the rest were very brief vignettes. that's based on the manga though, not the extremely long series of untranslated books. i might be wrong, though. it's been a very long time since i read it.

how about a guin saga series but they are explicitly banned from spending more than 5k an episode

the previous guin saga anime heavily changed things for the worse in ways that made no sense and stopped the narrative completely dead. but on the other hand in the first episode guin punched a guy so hard that his helmeted head lit a tree on fire from the friction so it is impossible to say if it was good or bad.

guin saga started off with violence then there was nothing happened episode after episode until i dropped it. it sucked so bad. it was supposed to have been a huge influence on the berserk author, and i can only imagine that influence was "ok but what if i made something good"

Was Miura influenced by the anime or the original novel series?

nice try smartmouth but it is fair to rate the quality of stories by their adaptations in other media

and before you try to bigbrain me by invoking the berserk cgi series, the 90s series and movies came first!

My understanding is that Guin saga is one of the longest published works in fiction and absolutely sucks rear end for longer than most series runs. Supposedly it gets good afterwards.

Sorry, talking about it will inflict unnecessary psychic damage but it's sociopaths drawing talking cartoon animals with an adolescent intellect being tortured, murdered and sexually assaulted for either the purposes of sadism or misery porn. The tone is extremely similar except MIA makes its subjects children (or things that look like children) and given what the artist has expressed interest in, it's not a surprise that the end credits shares a common animation style with that crowd.

Dungeon meshi rocks and I think the author said he was holding until the story was done to authorize an anime adaptation. Seems we're very close at this point.

fluffies are more comparable to toddlers than adolescents, and this is one of the most facile comparisons conceivable even if Made in Abyss’s mangaka is a creepy pedophile. the “tone” is also not remotely similar. child exploitation is a central theme of MIA and it’s unambiguously condemned, whereas exploitation in fluffy art is the point. fluffy poo poo is for people who like to run over stray cats with a lawnmower.
