I've been vibing to this recently but only just learned it's considered Future Rave, which I'd heard of but didn't really have an intuition for:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MveDLwDIZiI

And of course:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S69w0zMW-A0

To me, this sounds like big room trance. I could imagine Armin playing this stuff, even on an ASOT stage.

Saw Rezz and Porter back to back at a festival today. Their live shows remain among the absolute best out there.

Some of that future rave is interesting but listening at any length reveals it to be the fraud that it is in comparison to the classic

For the last 3-4 years the dubstep producer I’ve been the most enamored with is SVDDEN DEATH. Beginning a little over a year ago, SVDDEN DEATH started experimenting with a more theatrical stage presence in order to help develop a stronger identity with his own sounds. By the time SVDDEN DEATH was getting booked on big stages, they had already had all their best songs played as bangers in other DJ’s sets, and he needed a way to get people to more solidly identify his signature sounds as being his.

I have personally been obsessed with these sets and tracks since I heard them. The perfect confluence of everything I love about dubstep’s tone and tempo combined with over the top theatrics and heavy, dark atmosphere.

So last week SVDDEN DEATH released VOYD II, his first full length album release, and its loving AWESOME!!!!

I’ve listened to it once a day since release, just absolutely blown away by it. Haven’t connected with an album like this in a good long while. Spooky, atmospheric, pretty and repulsive, it’s just a fuckin sweet vibe.

This is good stuff! He's actually playing the festival I'm going to today, but he's on at the same time as Glass Animals (who I've been wanting to see for years) at the complete opposite side of the festival grounds :negative: So I'm probably gonna miss him. I bet he puts on a cool show, though!

I was kinda under the impression that future rave was more of a lofi take on classic rave, stuff that used to (maybe still should) be called leftfield house & techno:

Goddamn he chose the worst venue in the Denver metro area for this. Terrible open air amphitheater that has to have concerts start early as hell and have noise level restrictions for the suburbanites and office workers that are right on top of the place. And atrocious parking/roads to exit too.

Guetta opened with these 2 songs during his Ultra mainstage set. Even Hardwell opened with a future rave song in his return to performing after 5 years lmao.

Carl Cox's Resistance stage was really good all weekend. Cox's live techno set Saturday and house set Sunday were really good, but my favorite all weekend was Adam Beyer. I'd love to see him live at some point playing a 3-4 hour set.

Deep Purple began what was explicitly their farewell tour before the pandemic and have recorded another album during it.

All of Odesza’s albums have sad meloncholic titles that evoke the end of a happy moment, it’s just their vibe. I doubt two successful musicians in their 30’s are gonna call it quits immediately after dropping their first record in 4-5 years.

I wouldn't really be interested in seeing Oliver Heldens based on his festival mainstage sets, but his Hi-Lo stuff is really interesting. He's playing at a smaller venue here on Thursday and I'm tempted to pony up the $40 for tickets:

It's been a week for it, it seems. Tom Parker, the former boy band singer who got out of the studio system and into EDM production, has also died of a brain tumour aged just 33. I only learned that he'd done EDM from his obituary, but that's still terrible.

I ended up going and it was really good! Not great because the venue is quite small, only holds 370, and it was packed with kids doing dumb kid stuff. But the set was legit. Oliver played for 2 hours which is decent for a Thursday night and considering he's flying across the country to play in SF tomorrow.

Supposedly Soundcheck has an 80,000 watt sound system which is obviously overkill for a 4,400 sq ft space, but I think it's generally considered to be the best sound system in the area. Not that watts count for much, but for comparison, Echostage which is 30,000 sq ft and has a 3,000 person capacity has a 48,000 watt system.

Saw Rezz again tonight (in Houston). Holy poo poo, that was even better than her festival set I saw last week! Being up in the front row helped. Definitely go see her if you get the chance. There's only a handful of shows left on her tour, and I think she said she's taking time off of touring for a while after this.

My Girlfriend is getting into EDM a little after me taking her to a fair few shows. She likes Big Gigantic, Goldfish, Jai Wolf and Porter Robinson. Any reccomendations in that vein lots of groove, minimal in your face bass and preferably lots of horns, real or synth.
