The contention that there were two types of resistance, violent and non, and we can judge which one was more useful is daft, to me, because the utility is interconnected. You can't say "the boycotts ended apartheid" and not acknowledge the effect of the militant ANC, that's absurdly ahistorical because every time non-violent resistance has effected change it's been because the threat of violent resistance coming next was there alongside it. The road to success has always been presenting elite interests with the certainty that if they carry on ignoring the peaceful protests, the next ones won't be. MLK needs a Malcolm X, Gandhi needs a Bose and the INA, the Iranian National Front needs a Khomeini, you get the idea. Also if you want to be really cynical, a Harvard professor being like "uh it's bad to overthrow white elite interests with violence, do something less rude, it's totally more effective!" is like ha ha yeah okay
