I'm honestly scared about the prospects of that French election. We could probably deal with Orban fine, but another Russian stooge undermining EU and world peace right from the top of an European powerhouse, that is going to be a massive problem for all of us.

Much like the UK's spiral into complete poo poo can basically be blamed on David Cameron being a complete idiot at the worst possible time, I'd say France's woes are entirely traced to Macron spending his whole presidency doing nothing but riling the people instead of fixing any relevant issues. Good job, Macron.

Yeah its the Russians destroying the EU rather than liberals enacting garbage policies for 4 decades running and more and more chickens coming home to roost. The left has been destroyed nearly everywhere and more and more people are realizing that liberalism can't continue lest it kill them, so guess which fuckers are going to be winning elections in the near future?

I'm not entirely clear but I think he's just got a bump from Paris starting to report where he has eaten most of the socialist's base. If there is still a lot to come in from the north and east LePen will probably make up some ground.

Eh he wouldn’t win in the second round anyway.

Plus in the two weeks until then we’d probably have wall to wall coverage of him being a tankie authoritarian terrorist sympathizer with lots of suddenly uncovered evidence of anti-semitism. Though that might get him some of Le Pen’s or Zemmour’s votes.

Corona showed the need/benefit for the EU to exist as a bloc negotiating with the pharma companies.

Brexit showed the disaster that any -exit results in. Its been so bad leading Eurosceptic politicians across the continent like Le Pen completely stopped talking about leaving the EU. And it removed the largest opposition to deeper EU integration from within the bloc.

The invasion of Ukraine has completely discredited Putin and his influence in domestic politics in the EU. And shown the benefit of the united bloc against external threats. Not to mention the (surprisingly) positive, coordinated, response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis.

Europe produces far more food than it consumes, if theres a global food shortage its not going to hit here other than raising the prices of some items. And even the potential of a global food shortage has resulted in lots of Europeans actually realising the value of the EU's CAP for the first time in decades.

The polls on public opinion, and policy direction of politicians/national governments, are all moving in one very clear direction these days - further EU integration.

EU integration happens no matter what the polls say. the legal setup is for EU law to gradually supersede and replace national law as it expands in an organic way. there's no need to actually run on EU integration, it happens more or less on its own.

the biggest upset would be for le pen to win against macron this time. i don't think it's likely, but it's looking to be pretty close. if she won, there would be a major confrontation an it's not obvious to me who would win. france is a core country in the EU in a way that britain mostly wasn't. that makes them stronger in the Union, but it also makes it even harder for them to leave - they're on the euro, for one thing.

the EU as it is mostly works, but the commission seems to be centralising authority to itself, and that's going to make picking whoever follows ursula von der leyen more difficult, especially i the EPP is weakened in the parliament. i don't think that's likely to happen, though, EPP support has been mostly quite steady as far as i know. still, if there's a structural crisis in the making i'd guess that it would be there: EPP has a poorer-than-usual election and negotiations to form the commission get gridlocked because the commission has serious power now. i think the likelihood of that is relatively low, though.

finally, they're going to have to do something about hungary. orban's re-election and strengthening is a big problem for them, and now there's an opportunity to split him from the visegrad group on the ukraine issue. that confrontation has been long in the making, and it may actually happen now, depending on how cynical the other visegrad countries are feeling.

i mean lets say these (major) snags dissipate, what's the next big step in integration? universal schengen? adoption of standardized election systems and dates? more fiscal stuff? transfer of formerly national spending responsibilities to the EU budget? what happens between now and a borderless, 100% integrated EU?

V. Illych L.

imo probably some security integration, looking at ukraine. it's very hard to call these things, though - are the increased tensions with russia going to make the EU Army a reality, or will we double down on the US-led security structure of NATO? what role's german rearmament going to play here? my hunch is that they're going to double down on NATO in the short term, but a germany with an actual military is going to assert itself in this sphere as well, and if i were the german government i'd be pretty annoyed with the americans right now. there's also the old tensions towards turkey which makes NATO less attractive for some european nations.

if the EU actually starts trying to integrate ukraine into the Union, that would also be simultaneously a crisis and potentially a huge reform event since ukraine's such a hosed-up country. i can't see it happening, but i also didn't see the russians stage an all-out invasion and they did, so what do i know

i say swears online
Mar 4, 2005

thinking out loud i wonder if in the future there's a constituency for an anti-nato, pro-eu army government in france in the medium-term. seems like that would be the event to really tip the scales

As things stand right now, I actually agree! My point was that the eu is food secure, right now, much in the same way a man which is about to have a plastic bag over his head is oxygen secure.
And of course musing what a new famine will do to the middle east, sub Saharan Africa and subsequent migration flows and all the good vibes that seems to conjure up in old europe.we're also due for another Erdogan squeeze, those are always wonderful.

Ukraine controls enough of its farmland to get at least a 50% planting, which is enough to feed itself. Its the international buyers that will suffer but i hope that other major food producers (*COUGH* :911:) will stop turning as huge amounts into useless biodiesel for a year now that it wont crash the global food market.

people in the US don't eat that much bread other than as part of other foods like fastfood. At least in the part of the US I have lived.

And by that I mean nowhere remotely closed to the bread or pastryconsumption in my homecountry of Portugal or other european countries.

it really, really depends. nationwide and citywide chains usually maintain coupons that make it pretty accessible. i can get a large at a Marco's chain nearby for eleven bucks after tip which will last me three meals. you can get a $40 pizza if you want pancetta or w/e too. pizza's bottom-tier price in the US, cheaper than a big mac by far
