Yesterday I got my first identifiable tubeless puncture— I had a streak of sticky orange goo encrusted with fine sand on my saddle and seat tube. The puncture self-sealed and I made it the last 10 miles back home with a little less air pressure than I prefer.

Is there a post puncture procedure I should be following when punctures are bad enough to squirt visibly? I wiped down the tire to see if anything was stuck. I think I found the puncture site, should I shove a bacon strip into it, or is it ok to trust that the orange good did its job well enough to go on another long ride?

Trying to keep it under $200. The lower-end Lakes look quite nice too. I wish I could try these on in a store, my LBS basically only has Shimano and Specialized shoes.

They may still be eligible for the 20% off code you get from signing up for Competitive Cyclist's newsletter.

One nice bonus with a bike fit is sometimes the fitter will recommend specific brands' shoes. Mine did, and I got a mid level pair of Lake that had the mold shape that my fitter recommended. They fit perfectly after swapping out the insoles for Bontrager ones.

My fitter also recommended Specialized. Specialized/Lake shoes run wide and Shimano are narrower according to him and this thread. Maybe that's an useful reference point for you.

Any recommendations for kickstands? My bike doesn't have any mount point integrated into the frame. I know that kickstands are lame but I have a specific use case for it.

Steel? Do you have enough space between the chainstays to run a clamp on them?

I have about 1" square to work with because my chainstays have a bridge for the fender mount:

The chainring clears by about 1cm. I'll check out an adapter like that, hadn't crossed my mind.

Stupid question, I inherited a bike last year (it’s a late 80’s to early 90’s Schwinn) and I think the portable hand pump that’s mounted to it isn’t the right kind? The valves on the bike are the kind with the little nut you need to unscrew but I can’t get the pump to hook up to it right so either it’s the wrong kind or I’m really incompetent. Is there something obvious I might be doing wrong before I try to buy a different one?

Take pictures of the pump head and the valve to be sure. A $15 adapter might be a solution for you. Though a normal floor pump might offer better utility long term.

I bought this ‘truck’ to haul stuff up the 20%+ grades around here.

It has 90 gears (SRAM DD3 in the hub, and a 3x10).

Didn’t know about the DD3 until I picked it up. Lowest is 15 gear inches or so.

Real world 2x to 1x swap weight comparison --
I really wanted a bit gentler gearing jumps on my cargo bike. I had had a Sunrace 12spd minigroup (RD, shifter, cassette, chain) waiting for install onto my MTB, but figured I was riding the cargo bike so much more, might as well get utility out of it.

Went from 36/48 x 11-34 8spd to 44 x 11*-50 12spd

I bought the group as a package on eBay, but they gave me the wrong RD. It works with the same pull ratio as Sunrace's 11spd, but doesn't have as much lateral range. So I'm missing the 11t fastest gear.

Having ridden it for a week, I'm pretty happy with the both the improved gear jumps and the spread of gears, especially for climbing.
So I decided to finally take off the FD parts. I had still had my pogies on, so I guess that was keeping the dead weight tucked out of sight.

The old 8spd stuff was low-mid tier Shimano stuff, and the Sunrace parts were the one tier they have (minus the dumb exotic carbon parts that no one would buy).

Right shifter: pretty much the same weight
RD: Sunrace 8g lighter
Chain: I ended up using ~1.5 chains, at 74g lighter per full chain
Cassette: gained 314g here
FD, shifter: lost 273g of shifter, FD, a little chain keeper, and cabling.

For a total loss of 78g, not quite 3oz.

This doesn't address the chainrings. I had a steel 36t, and went to a 44t narrow-wide, which saved probably 20g or so.
In other scenarios, I might have been able to dump the outer steel ring entirely, which would be a bigger savings.
But if you'll recall, the bash guard is mounted to the big ring, and I went through this whole adventure to keep the bashguard.
Could have lost grams off of the crank and the big ring if I had just planned out the crank and 12spd upgrade together.

I can salvage this by getting an outer ring bashguard and swapping that in, leaving no visible explanation of why the cargo bike has a downhill crank and specialized bottom bracket.

Anyways, the benefits of going from 8spd to 12spd are great, and worth it when you also save weight.

Misc pics:

24" wheel with old cassette:

And new honker:

Before I had sized the chain right:

That definitely had me worried. Even though it seemed unlikely I would roll the tire that close to an obstacle.
After committing to 1x (the 12spd chain wouldn't shift over onto the big ring cuz of the wide space), I shortened the chain quite a few links:

The RD could have handled the 44 to 48 jump, especially with the extra slack in the long chain run, but I didn't really need both rings or to get an even bigger big ring.

Can you post closeups of the drive train and cockpit? So this jam has 3 gear selectors; front, rear, and hub?

I assume the preference is to leave the hub in the 1:1 setting until you have to hunt for fractional ranges.

There's two barcons for the derailleurs and on the left a grip shift for the 3 speed hub. Yeah, I leave that at 1:1 for the most part.

More details:

https://www.triketech.com/Drivetrain/dd3.html

In low gear the planetary engages the sun gear. Cassette 1.00 : Hub 0.73 rotation ratio.
In middle gear the hub and cassette are locked together with zero losses through internal gears; ratio is 1:1.
In high gear the planetary engages the ring gear. Cassette 1.00 : Hub 1.36 rotation ratio.

I'm a Sad Panda.
I have a Gore jacket which is lovely. It has a removable hood and is slim fitting. It however is 8 years old and the zips have failed to the point where they can't be replaced. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a possible replacement? I use it for commuting and hiking. I want it to have a hood, be slim-fitting and be properly water/windproof. I'm OK with paying for that.

I'm tall (6'4) and slim (170lbs) I looked around and am struggling. The Endura MT500 was strongly recommended when I was looking online but when I got it to try it the fit isn't great. You can make it tighter by pulling a variety of cords but that's a lot of faff and it still seems like it'd catch the wind way too much.

Thanks!

At least in my head you could probably make chainrings that are both 4-bolt 107bcd and one version of 4-bolt 110bcd compatible.

Shimano and KMC say that too (although KMC also make reusable ones) - and reusing the non-reusable ones does get it to a point where it clicks in super easily a lot faster, which may or may not be indicative of anything.

I need one of the nerd cycling YT channels to show me how the metal shaping around the quick link holes retains the pin, and how much the different designs distort/wear the thin parts of the metal with repeat use.

It's only a matter of time before that stuff wears down

e: thinking about how when I sold my Campy 12 bike to my friend, I also gave him 4 quick links. Which is like an extra $100 value these days.

I'll set the building on fire
I had to shorten the chain on some new bikes recently and quick links on there went back together way too easily and then would just come apart by hand with basically no pressure. So yeah I replaced those. I think they were 9-speed kmc chains, but maybe sram. Anyway when quick links get put together it deforms and widens the opening slightly so I probably won't trust a "re-useable" link for more than like 2, maybe 3 uses.
