No need to spend $1000+ when you can get e.g. a CR-10S Pro (or Pro V2), which is much cheaper and more than good enough at printing inserts. Here's some I printed this week at 0.28 ("draft" resolution) on the V2.

Seconding this. I went even cheaper and got an Ender 3 Max and a BL touch and after a couple weeks of tuttooing and fiddling out how things work I am now pumping out great things for my board games.
Have made this player cards/bits tray** for any sort of game (making them in our regular groups favourite colours with names etched on the back). As well as 1 and 2 compartment bits trays for middles of tables.

Also this is my make of an insert./organiser for Ark Nova...

This is a wingspan organiser/insert that has magnets from ali express (3USD for 100) to make it snappy

An insert (and token edge protectors, like coin cases but just snap-together edges you can 3d print for 1c of filament) for the Crew, as well as a First Player dong marker
and an example of the protectors for wingspan

Also I haven't got pictured but I also have Anno 1800 organiser (way more filament-savey than the Ark Nova one), a Spirit Island All-in-one box organiser, Raiders of the North Sea Collectors Box insert trays, and an Ares Expedition Insert that doubles as a Deck Holder so sleeved cards dont fly everywhere, and individual TR trackers** so you don't have to share the single cube track on the center board. Lemme know if you want more 3d Printer Board Game Porn

Is Cascadia worth getting if we have Carcassonne and Isle of Skye for tile layers? We get a lot of play out of Skye especially, so I'm trying to figure out if this is different enough to justify a place on the shelf.

I've got a 3d printer and I love it, but honestly I'm not sure it's that cost effective for making inserts - most of them use a lot of filament, and in many cases it would be comparable cost and a lot less time to just buy a FS insert or something (at least when it's available - obviously it's great for games with no aftermarket solution). The ability to make specific custom inserts/parts is definitely useful, but I've ended up using it a lot more for home-repairs and things than I have for board gaming. As stated, it's also definitely a hobby unto itself unlike an inkjet printer that just works out of the box. I've got a Prusa which is one of the printers that needs the least fiddling with, and it's still taken quite a bit of time learning how to optimise prints and do occasional maintenance and repairs.

Totally agree on the cost saving part I think I'll be at break even on inserts when I've made like 15-20 without accounting for failed prints.
I just enjoy making things with it and am a sucker for making all my games have organizers.
In terms of low filament use, you can always go for low-density organisers like this Anno one (not my print, but pics to show example)

That's a good point, you could definitely save a lot of filament over some of the typical designs out there. However, that means spending a lot of time designing stuff yourself which is fine if you enjoy it as a hobby (I generally do) but not so great if you are doing it to save money and value your time at anything even approaching minimum wage :)

I need to look into more designs that I can do with my resin printer as I haven't used that at all for boardgaming but would likely be able to do much more cool stuff in the realm of token/piece upgrades.

Yea deluxifying components with Resin is definitely something I'd love to do but taking consideration of the money I spend on Board Games and now 3d Printing, I would probably end up a divorcee figuring out how to 3d print a house with a 300mm bed space.

I demand more TI4 chat.

I'm going into a game with the choice of Emirates, Naalu or Naaz-Rokh. Emirates are out for me because I've played them before, and they feel very straightforward and safe. Naaz-Rokh are out because while they look cool, my group is convinced they're bonkers overpowered and they seem isolationist, which is lame to me.

So it's Naalu time.

As far as I can tell they're alright. The zero initiative thing is a game winner. The fighters can be abused.

My question is what the gently caress do I do first turn? All the choices feel bad.

Also all my opponents are 2 carrier or carrier/dread races. I'm the only one carrier race.

In a perfect world I'd secondary warfare, secondary research and take two systems. But I go first... and I'm poor...

So I can take leadership, take a system, out stall the warfare player and end up with two carriers and two systems and probably up one token. No research.

I can take warfare and do the same with one less token. Two systems, two carriers, no research.

I can take research, likely get stalled out by the warfare player and only take one system. It would be hard for me to luck into two systems.

I can trade. I'm guaranteed one system, money for research and 2nd carrier on warfare. Could maybe luck into two systems if warfare player has an aneurysm.

Construction gets me a base to build fighters on the next turn. No research. Probably no 2nd carrier.

Imperial is useless.

Politics is slightly worse.

Diplomacy would require incredibly generous timings on behalf of my not very generous friends and an amazing nearby sector. Maybe gets me research and warfare build but only one system.

Am missing something? The gently caress are the Naalu supposed to do turn one?

Is this base game or with the POK expansion? POK really didn't do any favors for Naalu. You need to beg borrow or steal good trade and warfare timings to allow you to build a carrier and move out with it, even if it means skipping tech.

For newbies, the map in the rule book is fine. There are a few pre-made maps out there for 5 players and there's a pretty good map generator at https://keeganw.github.io/ti4/. You can set it for 5 players and include warp tiles for better balance, if you have them.

Possibly different in the US, but inserts here are insanely expensive, sometimes more expensive than the game they're for. I think my Gloomhaven insert (holds Circles) took up 1 kg of filament (€12-20) while the "pro" inserts are €100 to buy. Other ruinously expensive inserts include Scythe and Terraforming Mars. With those alone I've probably saved half the printer's cost.

I managed to get Steampunk Rally Fusion Atomic Edition on the cheap. Reading just the manual it seems a bit much to teach, although that might be because the manual could've been written better.

What additional content is really essential and are there some things that one could do without? Events, Secret Projects & Challenge Tiles - the manual says leave all of this out from the first few games, but are all/any of them good additions after that?

Infinitum
Jul 30, 2004

Always do Secret Projects, because it gives you something to scrap dice towards - and it feels great to utilise them.

Events and Challenge Tiles I feel can be added in once players gain more experience, and get used to how quickly you go from "Why are the first few rounds so slow?" to "Lets just blow up a bunch of poo poo to zoom forward"

Yeah I'm hovering around 160, not counting expansions separately (they're almost all integrated into the base boxes, with expansion boxes long since trashed). I used to live in a huge house and it made no difference, but I recently moved across the country into a much smaller apartment and the space they occupy is significant now. My old place was kind of like a board game cafe for my friends group, but my new place is much too small for that.

I would like to play more TI but the games are long and they feel long. Maybe with consistent groups it wouldn't be as bad. I just feel like I get a craving once a year for it and then remember afterwards why I don't play it as much when I can just as easily get Civ or 18xx onto the table and have more fun.

Is the expansion worth it? It's so bloody expensive.

I think TI pulls out the fragile egos more than any other game I've ever played which hurts is viability. It's quite easy to have a good game just go tits up when someone loses a fight and/or knows they're out and goes full Space Risk on the table.

I used to have a "rule" that anytime my collection got over 100 games, I'd start selling them off to get back under the limit. I actually stuck to that for several years, but it fell apart since the pandemic started.

Now I have my nice wooden shelf that holds my 40-50 "top" games depending on box size. Classics, evergreen games, favorites, and new games that I'm still excited about.

Everything else gets jammed into a set of wire cube shelves until those overflow, and then rotated into "for sale" plastic storage bins that may or may not ever get processed.

I used to have a ton more games but the last few years I've been keeping my collection down to 40-50 games cos I find that even with playing twice most weeks, there are still games that sit unplayed for a year or more and that's even with a fairly small collection. I've also just come to accept that apart from a few very particular games (Barrage, Gaia Project, Spirit Island etc) I really do just enjoy novelty and learning new game systems more than playing the same thing repeatedly so it makes more sense for me to cycle my games over time once I hit that point of feeling like I've 'figured out' a game after 10 or so plays. It also makes it possible to keep buying and trying new games without breaking the bank.

Sorry, no idea what Naalu should do turn one, but on the above point, I'm saddened to agree with your group. I hate writing anything off as 'OP' because it feels like your criticizing anyone who plays it, and they're one friend's favourite faction. But in the case of these dudes, it really does just feel like they get to have Christmas every turn, right out the gate. In my opinion, the design mistake with them, was giving them both better payoffs for exploring AND making it easier for them to explore.

I haven't played them myself, so maybe I'm wrong? Anyone able to weigh in on that?

What's the best approach for teaching a game like John Company second edition to a group? One I know is decently familiar with the first edition. I know the rules and will make sure to have them down even better before the season, but I worry that it'll take most of the time just teaching the rules and then play will feel rushed. I always don't know howto approach this so any good tips or ideas would be appreciated.

Complex games are never gonna hit full stride in the first session. Badger the players to read the rules or find and send them a decent YouTube run-down before the session. Sure maybe only one of them will do it, but that will be someone else to help roll things along.

Budget time for a longer gaming session, kill the game after one turn and start again once everyone has a feel for the flow. Or just accept that you'll need to play it again, and try to play it next session.

Are you playing online? That's gonna be even harder.
