OK Amigaknowers, help me out here, because I've never seen any of this stuff before.

On the front, we have two floppies, and a syquest drive, which i had completely forgotten was even a thing that existed. I really hope it works, because I have a weird thing for ancient and strange media. Also the Syquest is labeled "Games 2" which is promising

Around back we have a metric ton of BNC connectors, what looks like a big SCSI port, and I'm assuming otherwise normal Amiga stuff. Also what looks like some sort of spill. Chicken soup? Mountain Dew? Whatever it is, its rock hard

Looking inside, we see, a LOT of hard drives, two mounted on things called Trumpcards :chaostrump: and one on what I am assuming is the CPU card? Its the thing with the big SCSI looking connector on the back. And a big mess of ribbon cables

On the side we see, a Video Toaster 4000. I really dont know much about these, other than hearing about them as a youngin with my Pentium-75 Gateway and how they were good for video work

There are two other cards next to the :trumppop: cards and I cant really tell what they are. One has RCA connections on the back, and the other has BNC

Closer shot of the CPU(?) card

The motherboard is a rev 6.4, which I've come to understand is something that matters in the Amiga world?

That is one expensive chunk of retro computer you have there! Pretty much the ultimate dream Amiga.

I believe it won't take a PC keyboard, but it should with an adapter. Keyboard is the large DIN socket in the front.

For mice and joysticks Amiga uses the more horizontal "Atari" connectors also in the front.

I just realized I dont know if I can use any keyboards I have with this. Will it take a standard PC XT keyboard? How about a serial mouse? Do I need adapters for that stuff?

No, you need an Amiga keyboard and mouse. The mouse is easy to find, the keyboard slightly less so. I believe there are adapters that will let you use USB keyboards and mice though.

Anyone have adapters or the actual keyboard and mouse they want to sell?

It lives! Fortunately I found adapters to allow me to use a modern keyboard, mouse and VGA video, but before I pressed the order button I had to see if it works

Unfortunately right now it can only output mono video over composite but it boots and didn’t complain about it at least.

I don’t really know much about any of those programs on screen, but it seems like there’s a lot there

One more hurdle you should be aware of. Amiga uses 15KHz signal for video. Most VGA and modern monitors only support 30KHz signal.

Here's a site with a large list of monitor support:
http://15khz.wikidot.com/

Back in the day you had a device called Flicker Fixer or Scan doubler that made Amiga's work with VGA monitors.

Here's a bit more detailed info on that:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flicker_fixer

Amiga 3000 included a built-in flicker fixer so it worked with VGA out of the box but your A2000 will need a proper monitor.

anyone know what the proper name is for the two screw post antenna connections on old tvs? like the kind you use to hook up an atari 2600 or such? tried searching a bunch of stuff and didn't seem to get anything terribly relevant.

is it just like, vhf antenna connector or something?

I think it's a twin lead RF connector.

300 ohm antenna connector. If you wanna hook up to something semi-modern with coax, you want a 75 to 300 ohm adapter like so:

I once went to a Radio Shack with another Goon looking for one and the guy working was suuuuper confused until it clicked in his brain and he called it a "magic adapter" and pulled one out from behind the counter. I never learned the real name for them.

Yeah this:

Well it's RF, so it is literally magic. Probably just a strip of metal in there that becomes wider to change the impedance.

Nah just a few turns of wire wrapped around a toroidal ferrite core. VHF only really gets magic-y at scales of a few meters.

Those matching transformers are still really easy to find and cheap, btw, because TV antennas still need them to connect to 75-ohm coax and despite time marching on, terrestrial broadcast TV is still a thing people use.

I spent most of last night getting my Atari 1040STE working with an USB drive using the Centurion USBee adapter.

Managed to get it to mount, read and write to an USB drive, but require me making a new "HDD" for my UltraSatan.

Strangely enough, a nearly 40 year old GUI has issues with properly mounting an USB drive. Who would've thought that?

Now with less breakage.

A bit newer, but I just just grabbed my 2007 thinkpad T61 (Centrino Duo! Vista license sticker! 5:4 screen!) down from a shelf to rip a 2008 CD - it was the newest thing I had around with a working CD or DVD drive.

The battery is completely dead, the bezel is cracked, and the hinges are iffy - but otherwise it Just Works. It booted into Ubuntu 11.04, and it's wild how nice my old linux desktop still feels. 11 years is apparently not that long - though the 15 years of hardware advances are more immediately obvious.

e: I miss the full height keyboard, though - and while 5:4 may be a bit much, I'd love to at least get a 16:10 screen again.

It’s weird how the change from say 2000 to 2020 is not as radical (hardware wise) as 1980-2000 I mean sure I can film and edit an entire movie in full hd 60fps on my phone, but going from pure text to live video at all is quite the leap
