When Jean-Luc first opened that book and saw the labyrinth, I thought it was a picture of a brain and a clue that his mom had the same syndrome and that was going to cause a Character Moment to happen, but nah

I honestly thought at first that the mom flashbacks were just going to be another Sir Patrick as EP flourish, because his father was violent and he does charity work (iirc) for an English group that works to help survivors of domestic violence. I haven't watched episode 4 yet but it sounds like I might actually have been wrong on that prediction based on the thread.

I don’t think we actually got an explanation of what that thing was, did we? It was the star, the glow ball, and in the book.

I'm annoyed that we had almost an entire episode to discovering what's going on in Picard's head but they couldn't even finish that storyline off.

and yes, Raffi is by far the worst character on the show and I don't even really like Elnor

It is very on-brand for this show to write the bizarre genie bottle summon thing and and then have characters react in shock when it doesn't work. Like the whole concept could have been dropped and the net result of the scene, plot-wise, would be the same. I assume it'll come up again and work, but this is very typical of the overall chunky storytelling and agonizing pacing of this series, unfortunately.

It still could be. Stewart knew that his father was abusive but it wasn't until years later that he realized that his father was also a victim of a system that sent him to war and never gave him the tools to deal with what he experienced.

Speaking of Raffi, I just want her and Seven to realize their fake relationship is actually how they really feel, and their talk of growing old together and sitting on park benches harassing "youths" is their perfect life and they should get married.

Honestly, they only good Raffi stuff this season are her little asides with Seven.

And speaking of Seven, I'm surprised there hasn't been anything from her on not having her borg implants. Like, she went to do something she normally could (like inject some nanoprobe into some computer to "talk" to it) and not be able to. Or some of her "borg memory" slowly slips away or what have you. Just weird that other than that first scene of her waking up in the "bad" future and touching her face, there's been no mention of it.

Yeah I instantly thought they were doing that and it's good they aren't.

e: I don't understand why Picard cares about Raffi at all. I get plenty of reasons why he could care, but season 1 cast gathering was literally "I need a bunch of emotionally damaged fuckups looking for redemption because I'm going on a suicide mission" and obviously none of that has transferred onto season 2.

Tune in next week and maybe we'll obliquely tease it and yet still not answer it!"

Could have been either or a combination. It just seems odd the way the writers dealt with it considering the greater context of Trek, especially considering other examples in Trek and history where people with mental illnesses* are mistreated or forced into treatment against their will.

*not always illnesses but just being different than the majority is classified as an illness or problem like with the super soldiers exiled to a lunar prison or the androgynous aliens enforcing mental reeducation to anyone who chooses a gender (this paralleling trans issues).

I really don’t think it counts as “tonal whiplash” if there’s been five whole episodes between the two scenes you mention.

You can probably edit a single episode of good TV out of Stewart doing his one to one scenes with the good guest actors.

Also lol at Picard deciding this episode 'I know writers who's characters experience growth over the course of their stories and gently caress that I refuse'. A bit meta

I kind of half-rear end explained it by saying "confidence." More like she's basically seeing what it's like to have space white privilege and she's like "whoah, this is what it's like when people don't gawk at and get scared of your face all the time, it rules!"

That account for, uh, two days, three tops? I know Gene wanted grief to be a thing that 24th century people just got over immediately, but Raffi's whole deal last season was tortured grief over her choices and what happened in her past. She gets a reprieve and a temporary "new son" in ep 1 of this season, loses him and basically gave Picard the finger because she's so fed up and angry. Then at most two days later she needs to be reminded of her grief by seeing hallucinations, otherwise she's just cracking jokes and for the most part just enjoying herself. And not because they've actually accomplished anything, mind you - they've been pretty much thwarted and have had to deal with setback after setback at every turn.

If it's not tonal whiplash, it's at the very least a pretty jarring tonal inconsistency.

HD DAD posted:

But none of that characterization of her has been established before and it doesn't track with what we've seen. If they were paying attention and this is intentional, you'd think they'd put a line in there about how 'you're dealing with this all really well' and she could be like 'it's eating me up inside but I have a mission to do' and that would be the very least they could do to make it feel less awkward on screen.
