i watched the 1999 film the 13th floor because i vaguely remembered seeing the box at the rental places (???) as a small child and i was surprised to find that its yet another movie that came out in 1999 that has pretty much the same premise as the matrix. how many of those movies did they make?? this is like the fifth now that i can think of off the top of my head without going broad enough to include poo poo like fight club as well
One of the major reoccurring themes of many 90s movies was the whole suburban middle-class existential crises: be it matrix-reality-isn't-what-it-seems or American Beauty style; but ultimately either are "woe is me, the financially and housing secure middle-upper class white guy with an cubicle job, family and wife i hate, what is reality? why am i living this lie??". It's a big combination of fukuyama end of history brain worms, liberal democracy has won, da future is on the up and up and everyone can only ever get richer, and last period in recent american history where actually most people were somewhat well-off or could live on their income and didn't have to worry about not getting fired or feeding the kids as much. That gave more leverage and ability to introspect 'what is reality, is this all there is to life???'. Though there's also a caveat to that applying more towards the hollywood-connected-genx/lateboomer class that was emerging at the time being their priorities or experiences.

That all quickly eroded like a half-decade later and now its like "wow give me that lovely office job i wish i had healthcare plz. also whats a cubicle??"

yeah you pretty much had hit all the big ones earlier but i wouldn't say fight club was that far out of the realm of matrix/dark city/truman show/etc.

arguably i would add groundhog day, american beauty, being john malkovich, trainspotting, the burbs, office space, the game, etc though some are getting very very broad though within the intent.

I saw a great short about a guy who hates his life and doesn't have a purpose but doesn't aknowledge it. he's moderately a good dad, teaches his kid math and buys him toys, goes to his computer toucher job and does it well and doesn't start a fight when he could. calm and controlled. his wife left him long ago b/c of his distance to reality. "honey where should we go on vacation" "oh idk if I can do that because boss expects me that week, maybe we can just take a trip to the mountains for the weekend"
and he not only cannot deal with his unhappiness, he cannot realize he's so deeply unhappy

the performance really ruled b/c it's every middle age person now. "I have a tesla and I'm a nice guy, I guess that means I'm happy" they didn't have to spell it out it was obviously the future of me and everyone I know.

The whole beep boop attitude, give input receive output, gets especially depressing yet kinda hilarious when you see how people apply to it themselves. 'I have everything I'm supposed to want and I'm still not happy???' is about as deep as most of those go, unable to take the next step in the end of history.

what’s the name of the short?

i saw this kind of thing coming for me post-college graduation and just violently took a left turn, was homeless for a bit, moved across the nation, got into the medical field, etc. etc. I really like my job now but there’s a million barriers to advancement and my body is breaking down, so maybe I’ve traded one hell for another.
