Just watched One Hour Photo last night (good movie, not socialist) and this whole conversation reminds me of the scene towards the end where Robin Williams holds a couple hostage at knifepoint and forces them to pretend to engage in sexual acts while he takes pictures and melts down about how they're supposed to look like they're having fun instead of terrified and miserable and anyway Hollywood execs seem to have the same level of understanding when it comes to intimacy.

Just remembered that House of Gucci was a mid budget, modestly popular movie that had some consentual sex scenes in it. Mainly remember that because awhile back someone did an edit of the Nicole Kidman AMC video to make it so she's watching the scene where Adam Driver is going down on Lady Gaga.

This is clearly us seeing these women through the eyes of Phoenix, so the movie is not truly treating them as fully clothed - it is trying to tell us something about his character. This is not gratuitous.

I watched the newest Purge last night, and god do those movies stink. The political commentary is shallow and toothless and the action scenes are straight to dvd quality. All you have to do to make the premise work is make it schlocky and over the top, like the Running Man or Robocop. A society where the Purge exists should be nutty, not somehow more mundane than real life America except for that one day a year. Not Socialist. No Positive Sex.

People tell me there's a lot less narrative work happening because it's just not worth it so only commercial stuff is getting made, except 2. the chinese film criticism circle, i.e. festivals and their movie goers, where censorship is less of a problem, are really into pretentious experimental stuff so that's the viable indie route. Kinda like how in America 'issue' movies do well (movies about abortion, growing up asian in a white community, female empowerment, whatever) and that leads film makers to go that direction if they don't want to/can't go commercial also because 'co productions' have dried up in the last few years, that is movies made with chinese money but filmed in america/abroad, a lot of chinese talent has left the USA. Also with covid closing down production for several months while china remained open, the choice was sorta forced for many people who already had their work slowing down. also also it's always tough to be a new director but I believe it's a total generational change now because of how powerful celebrity status is in China. you really need stars and you need what in English we might call 'Executive Producer' but who's role is really to stamp their name on the film. Imagine you make a low budget adventure movie and it says "Stephen Spielberg Presents" as the first credit, even tho he just had a few notes on the script and the edit and didn't even give money. edit: idk if that's the kind of trends you wanna know about. I find it's very rare that a sex scene advances the story. a lot of times it's just 'here's a thing that happened' and then the next scene resumes the storytelling. the really sexy sex scenes are the ones where the story telling doesn't get put on pause. the characters are learning about each other and making choices and all that normal drama stuff. Lost Highway has a great sex scene for example, though it's the opposite of sexy edit: lynch and cronenberg both use sex as story telling actually & that's why videodrome's sex scene rules as well
