So, uh, couples "like that" meaning age difference? Or couples like whatever "May-September" connotes?* Or couples like soppy saccharine soap operas? *is it May to September romance, like a pointless but pleasant summer fling? or May-September pairing, like 2 months that don't go well together? Or a May-September pairing where September is past the summer of his life while May is still in her springtime? simplefish fucked around with this message at 01:58 on Apr 20, 2022 |

Yeah obvious to us it'd be creepy, but neet specialises in being oblivious to the obvious. Glad to see him catch on here. I hadn't heard of a May-September romance before, so wondered if it was an English or Japanese phrase with a particular connotation, or a direct translation. Plus the multiple possible readings of that hyphen/dash. Hooray language!

simplefish posted:So, uh, couples "like that" meaning age difference? The original Japanese uses the phrase 年の差恋愛, "toshi no sa ren-ai". "Toshi no sa" means "a difference in age", and "ren-ai" means "romance" or "falling in love". (Those of you with a passing knowledge of Japanese should recognize 愛, "ai", "love".) "A romance with a significant age difference" is an unwieldy and inelegant direct translation, so I pulled up my translating sleeves and came up with "May-September Romance", which is an English phrase I had heard sometime somewhere before, probably from the 1971 Hal Ashby comedy Harold and Maude now that I think about it. So it's by no means a direct translation. I've just "flavored" it up a little. In the following comic Tohru says, "In reality, couples like that are disgusting and repulsive." This is more of a direct translation, the key word here being おぞましい, "ozomashii", "repulsive, disgusting, abhorrent". I think it's interesting that Tohru says it's THE COUPLE that is disgusting, not the OLDER MAN taking advantage of a YOUNGER WOMAN. I can't claim to know what's in the original author's mind when he writes something like that, or if relationships like that are thought of in the same "victim/abuser" lens that we have in the US and the rest of the English speaking world. It seems, at least in Tohru's mind, both parties are engaging in a transgressive act deserving of scorn. There are probably a lot of social and cultural reasons for this, but I fear if I offered my opinions on this I'd be guilty of generalizing a foreign culture. I know this is a sensitive subject, and I'm trying to navigate it with as much sensitivity as I can while also staying true to the original Japanese writing. If I thought the comic was devolving in to smut I wouldn't translate it anymore. edit: spelling Mackerel Cornflake fucked around with this message at 05:30 on Apr 20, 2022 |
