Isentropy posted:Honestly I'd prefer some analysis on what's happening with the Fil election over random white guys getting mad about GINA. Yes, he still is. The liberal, Leni Robredo, has gained some points, mostly at the expense of the undecideds and the other non-Marcos candidates, but it remains somewhat unlikely that she'll catch up in the three weeks left before the elections. More recently, Isko Domagoso, the Mayor of the City of Manila and another presidential candidate, held a press conference along with Ping Lacson, former police chief and also a presidential candidate, calling on Robredo to withdraw from the race for the sake of having people unite against a single non-Marcos candidate. This was largely laughed out of the room because Domagoso is third in polls, and Lacson is in fifth. As well, two days ago, Leody de Guzman, the socialist candidate, avoided an assassination attempt by local gunmen as he made a campaign stop in the south of the country and was speaking out in favor of land reform to a crowd of mostly indigent farmers.

huh weird that the socialist candidate was the one facing an assassination attempt when these other guys were the ones advocating for a brilliant four dimensional chess plan to defeat marcos

bedpan posted:Really appreciating the election coverage, btw. I do also want to mention that one of the issues with the election this year is that we're not getting as much polling as we did in 2016 when I said that Robredo was gaining on Marcos, that was based on a survey that was conducted between Mar 17-21, and was released to the public on Apr-6 if we take that Mar-21 survey, and compare it to a prior survey from the same pollster, we get: pre:Marcos: 56% (previously 60%) Robredo: 24% (previously 15%) Domagoso: 8% (previously 10%) Pacquiao: 6% (previously 8%) Lacson: 2% (previously 2%) in comparison, Pulse Asia did three surveys in Feb 2016, and another three surveys in March 2016 another generally trusted pollster, Social Welfare Stations, did one survey in March 2016, and a second one in the first week of April. This year, we haven't heard from them since January 2022. There are new polling firms this year that were not present in 2016, and they're generally within the same margins as those results from Pulse Asia, but even then the most recent of those polls are from polls conducted Apr-6 when we should be getting much closer dates by now it seems to be a combination of COVID making it harder for the pollsters to go out and do face-to-face interviews, COVID making people more reluctant to be polled, and apparently some kind of issue with financing where nobody wants to pay to sponsor polls anymore the last full poll for 2016 was conducted from May 1 to May 3, and was released to the public on May 6, three days before the election itself I mention all of this because the large lag time between polls, and the relative scarcity of polls, makes it more likely that there's going to be some kind of polling miss come election day itself

paint in socialist realist style a 14 year old on a motherboard assembly line, wearing a knockoff supreme shirt, face lit by the LED ring of his magnifying glass, solder and gun in hand, while busy figures move behind them in a blur under florescent lights Then paint a 20 something office worker, bored in her 3rd meeting of the day, staring listlessly into her cellphone while several 50+ year old men debate over graphs in a powerpoint slide finally paint the 30 something rivet man, suspended 100 feet in the air, as he stamps I beams together in preparation for another highspeed rail line to be completed transversing the gorge he's now above. his face is beaded with sweat and his rivet gun hangs heavy with its pnumatic line running out of frame. but he looks determined and maybe even smiling a tryptic like that would probably not feel as kitch

socialist realism is actually immensely romantic, but when you don't identify with the romanticism it comes off as a kinda "negative naivety" No young people have a romantic stirring that somewhere some young party member is fighting for them in a behind closed doors meeting In China art schools masters of any style are a dime a dozen, china focuses a lot on technique and studying previous painters so you can find hyper realist oil painters or people who can create something exactly in the style of van gogh What really stands out to Chinese painters, at least the ones I know, is a kind of "positive naivety". The paintings aren't technically impressive, at least to a non-painter like me. But they capture a feeling in a unique way, using imagery not seen 100s of times and in a style that more obviously comes from the painter, imo much in the way a child first tries 2 dimensional representation Like I would guess a painting like this would be considered extremely good by my painter friends

you go to a western art school and the kids can't paint for poo poo cause the teachers don't know how to either, but you probably develop your 'voice' instead as well as get to try several mediums and styles and it's generally a safe place to figure yourself out as an artist I'm pretty sure in China outside the best schools they teach you how to paint really fuckin' good and it's competitive i.e. not a safe space. go to any mfa in the US and the international students will mostly be able to paint circles aroudn the american kids, but they don't really see it as valuable drat I really miss my friends in China

When I think of Socialism Realism, I think of some movies from the 80s, 90s. I don't think about oil painting. Oil painting as an art form has become very niche in the west, still niche in China, but you can find more of them in art exhibits than in the US.
