This happened across my timeline. Yeah, I can see why they'd have to apologise for that one. https://twitter.com/mediaINDIGENA/status/1517154981681410048 This metaphor doesn't shed light on the issue at all, but it does give Ramirez the chance to draw some cool machinery.

I mean, come on - this cartoon is literally suggesting that aid to Ukraine be withdrawn because they might be our enemies next if we help stop Russia conquering them. Last time we had a war this size in Europe, we executed people for this poo poo. Meanwhile, if you want some irony: in Mariupol the last holdout defenders against Putin's "de-Nazification programme" are pinned in the Azovstal steelworks and are out of ammo. The Russians could kill them or overrun them at any time with basically zero losses, but have instead chosen to leave them in place. Those defenders? The Azov battalion, who actually are Nazis.

Mr. Squishy posted:This happened across my timeline. Yeah, I can see why they'd have to apologise for that one. I'll confess my ignorance. What makes this cartoon offensive? The related article and twitter replies are all just acknowledging it sucks but... and I hate to say this... I need the suckage explicitly spelled out for me, please? Is the problem entirely centered around the presence of the ceremonial headdress, and the fact that no one goes around dressed like that anymore, or is there a deeper objection to the content of the cartoon itself? Because my reading of it is in line with what the article offered as the intended reading of the cartoon: the pope is being rightfully rebuked for not including actual concrete compensation along with his apology. What am I missing?

I thought the joke was nobody was voting for the author stand-in because Americans are too stupid and mean to appreciate smart nuanced politics like "big money controlling politics is bad and also the government shouldn't pass any laws against it or do anything ever", how is it a tie, is it a 0-0 tie?

quote:The Disney groomers are seeing a push back of Biblical proportions. Seven out of ten parents are canceling their Disney Plus. People are selling their Disney stock and refusing to do business with the “woke” corporation. I'm interested to know where this particular bullshit fact came from. Like, I realize that creating the illusion of "and the AMERICAN PEOPLE are on our side " is extremely important to the right wing media bubble, but most outlets just sorta imply there's a huge movement behind them but eschew any actual numbers. If 70% of the American public was canceling a subscription to one of the largest media companies, explicitly for homophobic reasons, you'd think that outlets other than realeaglenews dot biz would, y'know, notice. oobey posted:Because my reading of it is in line with what the article offered as the intended reading of the cartoon: the pope is being rightfully rebuked for not including actual concrete compensation along with his apology. Barring anything about the headdress (which I won't comment on because I'm an ignorant white boy), the comic can easily be read as "listen, the Pope is genuinely sorry for the Catholic Church's treatment of indigenous peoples! But now this LAWYER is here DEMANDING cash from the poor little Pope, it's ridiculous! He said he was sorry!" From the article in that tweet, the supposed intention was to illustrate that a simple apology isn't enough, but it's one of those weird situations where the visual language of political cartoons sort of automatically casts the lawyer and indigenous person as the "villain" of the piece. "Genuine statement (that should be taken seriously)" followed by "snarky follow-up (which shows how ridiculous my political opponents are)" is baked in to the medium by this point, look at any Ramirez cartoon.

: Four weeks to go to the election Rowe: Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has contracted COVID-19 and is in isolation for a week (he's campaigning virtually and sending out the rest of his team). Scott Morrison is trying to pivot away from the Solomons diplomatic disaster by doubling down on how Labor is weak on China by attacking the Labor deputy: Scott Morrison accuses Richard Marles of being soft on China, rejects Solomon Islands criticism (ABC). Pope: The teal independents are the Voices group that all use teal as their colour branding and are running with a strong climate change position against Coalition MPs. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg as a moderate Liberal has been bouncing around trying to help his side as Scott Morrison is seen as too odious in those electorates, but Frydenberg has a teal challenger of his own which polling suggests has a decent chance of defeating him. Shakespeare: Moir: Leak, Son of Leak: Scott Morrison and Peter Dutton hit out at Richard Marles over his remarks about China's presence in the Pacific (Sky News). The lines Marles wrote last August in Tides that Bind that Morrison, Dutton and the Australian are slamming are ""Australia has no right to expect a set of exclusive relationships with Pacific nations... They are perfectly free to engaged on whatever terms they choose with China or, for that matter, any other country. Disputing this would be resented, as the recent past has shown." Morrison says these lines show that Marles thinks Australia should not be resisting China's involvement in the Pacific region. Marles has responded by saying we should be doing more in the region to earn the right to engage with nations free to make their own decision (that is the blurb of the actual book). Knight: We're going to get a whole campaign full of these cartoons as the issue is tearing the Liberals apart Coalition MPs urge caution over ‘redundant’ bill to exclude trans women from female sport (Guardian). There is potential for it to bring down the NSW state government as they are in minority and they only have one independent's support on the guarantee that they stick up for LGBT+ rights. Leunig:

How did it turn into... this? I know the term "slippery slope" gets used in a lot of dumb ways, but when it comes to bigotry a lot of times that's how it works. At some point Ishida decided it was okay to dehumanize trans women because their existence was, in and of itself, a bad thing. He experienced blow back on this and was faced with two options: A) examine his bias and change his worldview to something less cruel and degrading. Or B) Double Down He picked B and just sort of started spiraling down over the years becoming more and more intolerant as he began accepting increasingly insane right-wing talking points as truth.
