China’s navy puts 2 more advanced Type 055 destroyers into service in push for blue-water fleet quote:The Chinese navy has put two more of one of the world’s most powerful destroyers into service, taking to five the number confirmed as commissioned in the last two years as part of China’s plans to create a blue-water navy. No announcement, but looks like two more Type 055 destroyers are now in active operation.

there was a moment I realized a knew like a dozen catholics in china but I guess statistically they're like half a percent of the pop? I grew up catholic so I was like hmmm are they tryin to rope me back in edit: estimates are 0.5% to 1% ok I guess. Google says there's 80 million protestants in China while 140 million in USA. I think protestants are makin that number up on both counts, way too high. that's like "have you ever been to church? just on christmas in 1994? OK you're protestant then" #s Antonymous has issued a correction as of 20:10 on Apr 22, 2022 |

As a foreigner you are either insanely anti-china (likely) or insanely pro china (unlikely but possible, see this thread), or you lived there and your opinions are more tepid

back in the US people occasionally say some really strong anti-china poo poo around me and then I look at them and blink and they go "oh yeah you used to live there right?" but if I say anything tepid they look at me like I'm brainwashed. I had a coworker disregard me as "probably a spy" cause I said it's not China trying to take over the world, America is the one instigating or inserting itself into every armed conflict on the planet

State capitalist bureaucracy is still capitalist bureaucracy. As for Imperial China, I've spent more time studying the details of Chinese Imperial bureaucracy than modern Western ones (despite working in a very typical, possibly even archetypal, Western bureaucracy) and it's not only a separate lineage I'd be pretty dubious about talking about them as the same kinds of things. Like we use that term in English, but it's not a contiguous tradition and the differences are more substantial than the similarities. I don't think it's quite at the level of being an actively bad translation if you're talking broadly but if you're trying to have any insight into the details of how bureaucracies function it will lead you astray. It's a "bureaucracy" in the sense that it's a governing alternative to aristocratic or feudal governance, but the similarities start to fray rather quickly. James TC Liu's Reform In Sung China is mostly about Wang An Shi but it's impossible to talk about Wang An Shi without a lot of detail about the Imperial government, and I think it's a particularly useful insight as the reforms he made could be argued as a significant shift in Imperial China toward the capitalist mode of production (note the "toward" there - I'd still say China was pretty proto-capitalist for the next several hundred years, but if you look at the before & after in that book you can see a startling difference and just how incredibly alien the pre-reforms government was). I'm not sure what other bureaucracies you might be referring to - obviously there's non-bureaucratic and pseudo-bureaucratic administration going back to prehistory, but the contemporary lineage of bureaucracy in most histories I've read is either dated to the French Revolution or American and German rail companies.

Not an important story, but a fun one to speculate about with global supply chains and the war thing going on. https://www.unian.net/war/rukovodst...u-11797413.html A large chemical plant in Odessa put 2000 workers on leave without pay. The plant director paid out himself and two of his pals about $230K USD bonus around the same time.
