It was hell sleeping there once every ten days for duty (yes we had ten section duty back in 2017 and was the only decent thing about that command). Can’t imagine legit living on a boat in Newport News.

Most folks only stayed there on duty days, they had people living in an old high school nearby, but I think that reached capacity or was too far away (it wasn't) for duty days. The YRBLM 24 I think was the name. It was that memorable that today I remember the random alphabet soup name/designation. I lived like 3 miles from NOB gate 3 and while the jet noise could be annoying it was nothing compared to the 5 trillion tiny shreiking frogs that lived in the rain flooded parking spaces under my bedroom window

A lot depends on how they've been maintained, the brief time I was in PNS we had a recently overhauled one that was decent. One of my buddies was on the same one pre-overhaul, and all the doors had rusted out 6-12" at the bottom, so frigid Maine air blew in in the winter and temps couldn't be maintained above 40 degrees inside. What's the berthing like, is it like dozens of people in bunk beds and stuff? For the MANY faults of the NCF we at least had ok-ish barracks compared to what junior guys on ships experience. But we still had the black mold.

In florida the one we were on was okay, but only because our crew was so undersized you’d basically almost have a berthing to yourself some duty days. Didn’t trust the water in the plumbing though Also lol’ing that the lovely XO went to my alma mater do not recommend it lol

Upon commissioning I was sent to a ship in the yards and was berthed on the barge. In Norfolk, in January, there was neither hot water nor heat in the berthing spaces. The galley barely worked so the food was half raw. Triad attitude was basically as above, "get over it, this is your life now." I decided within one month of commissioning that I was leaving active duty after my obligation was up. Ooh, mine was right next to the water breaks so maint. support doing pre-op at 3am while I was tryna get my three hours of sleep was amazing. We didn't have hot water my last time on the berthing barge. I think we were in 3 or 4 section duty, we had to have armed watches on the ship and the barge. I think we had to go back to the ship to eat, as the galley wasn't functional. First time we had hot water, we didn't use the galley though, they cut us a full food allowance and we were supposed to provide our own food, which was rough on duty days because we didn't have any working fridges. Can't for the life of me figure out why the navy perpetually has retention and morale issues...

I got to sleep in a stateroom on the barge in Guam for awhile which was pretty cool. Because the Navy bought hotel rooms for all our officers (hotel rooms we were not allowed to rent), because you can't put college graduates on the loving barge because that's inhumane to civilized college graduates. And... I've posted about this enough. Apparently I have "triggers" now. Thanks Navy. E: that includes all the ones we fired for slamming us into a mountain. Watching all their orders come in for cush shore duties they can ride their careers out on has been a loving treat. I'm stuck here dealing with the consequences of their years of gently caress ups and gross mismanagement of the ship and Captain Aljilani's "admirals masted" to aquesitions so he can help buy the next generation of worthless bullshit waste of money LCS II or what loving ever, until he retires with a $100k/yr pension and a cushy "contractor" role at a defense contractor that pays twice that and just be forced to live in a slightly smaller mansion in his retirement years as his punishment for nearly literally loving killing me and my shipmates through blind loving incompetence and crippling the Navy's most capable ASW and ISR platform and costing the government literally hundreds of millions of loving dollars. 10 sailors.have killed themselves in the last 10 months on the GWB, this level of mismanagement is criminal, how the gently caress are these MOTHERFUCKING WORTHLESS PIECES OF poo poo THAT RUN THIS SERVICE NOT FACING ANY loving CONSEQUENCES FOR THEIR loving ACTIONS. Shipyards are hell on earth for junior enlisted. You aren't actually covered under OSHA standards because OSHA protocols are under Department of Labor and not DoD. It was (emphatically) the worst.
