while that post is funny.. i don't believe they're actually correct about what happened. https://twitter.com/0xInuarashi/status/1517674505975394304 so apparently there was two things. 1. the project had an auction for their NFTs where people bid via the blockchain, if you don't win they refund you the eth you bid into the NFT 2. this part i'm not sure exactly of the underlying process, but basically their code wasn't designed to handle bad data from bids correctly and would cause the refund code to fail every time it was run, which prevented anyone from getting a refund because the code would fail everytime before they successfully processed all the refunds... and it wouldn't do anything if all of the refunds weren't made yet. 3. guy who sent the bad data basically told them he'd withdraw the bad transfer if they admitted they didn't test their code. they admitted to it, he canceled the transfer (i don't actually know how this part worked). 3. once the hacker unblocked the contract.. well they had another problem. the code to claim their funds.. had a bug basically their own contract prevented them from getting any of the funds once they were finished. there is a piece of code in the function that lets them allocate the eth that was put into the smart contract.. they have code to make sure all the refunds are processed first. quote:require(refundProgress >= totalBids) totalBids is obviously the number of total bids made for the project, refundProgress is how many refunds they've made so far. Both numbers have to basically match if they want the money for the project. however. what they didn't account for is that you can send more than one bid per transaction (tx)... guess what they used to increment the number of refunds processed? yup the "transactions" that contained multiple bids. "oh so you're making 5 bids on one piece of paper? okay i'll mark that as ... 1 bid" final value of refundProgress: 3669 total items they minted: 5495 3669 >= 5495 will always throw an error in that "require" function... they can never get the money from the project they created... the hypothetical $45 million Edit: it was $34 million hypothetical us dollars Strong Sauce fucked around with this message at 05:32 on Apr 25, 2022 |

So now every crypto with a smart contract activated that people buy or sell, there will be a new verification process: First, the contract has to go thru an software audit and security-scan, then the contract has to go thru a rigorous UAT testing process thru typical transaction scenarios, automated. If everything passes, you receive a certification on a separate blockchain that confirms the smartcontract is all certified before the buyer and seller complete the transaction. Then once all the transactions report back certified the next coin can be mined. If one transaction/contract has an issue, the mining is paused, and the developers have to fix and submit the contract, for the next coin can be created.
