One thing I’ve always wondered, when it’s a building in a city does the demo company have to pay for the dust clean up too? Like, I don’t know, window washing in the surrounding area?

The FAA denied their request to do the stunt. They did it anyway.

quote:

“The FAA will investigate Sunday evening’s attempted Red Bull Plane Swap in Arizona,” the statement said. “The agency on Friday denied the organizer’s request for an exemption from Federal regulations that cover the safe operation of an aircraft.”

NBC News obtained a copy of that denial of exemption letter by the FAA, dated April 22 and signed by Robert C. Carty, the agency’s deputy executive director for flights standards service.

The FAA concluded that granting the exemption “would not be in the public interest” and it “cannot find that the proposed operation would not adversely affect safety,” according to the letter.

It's so good. Also Tony Jaa not realizing that wires are used in stunt work and just training like an insane person to do all the stunts in that movie is pretty OSHA...

I'll bet that's going to go great for both of their pilots, mere days after that Youtube rear end in a top hat got his license yanked for his crash.

Obviously this crash wasn't intentional but when it happened as a direct result of doing something they were specifically told not to do...

It's a cool stunt :colbert:

But yeah they should've gotten the permission, not cool to gently caress with the FAA.

That's not the first time they ignored the local rules either, I think there was a scandal with another stunt a few years ago too.

FAA gonna pull the license of everyone in the Flugtag this year

EDIT, or for maximum trolling, call in a favor with the NTSB and have them force the organizers to put the competition on hold while they thoroughly investigate each crash and mishap.

The 2015 Fluftag in Portland was a fuckup. After a bunch of boats a kayaks got into a kerfuffle with the Portland Spirit (one of those cases where everyone involved sucks), and the Coast Guard realized Red Bull had failed to cordon off the shipping lanes so the spectators weren’t in the way of, y’know, barges full of lumber or whatever.

quote:

"The event organizers did not take the correct actions to maintain the commercial waterway," Degener said, and the Coast Guard rescinded their permit around 3 p.m.

Besides being unsafe there is a regulation that pilots can't leave the controls of an aircraft. They asked for a waiver of that rule and the FAA said "no, just use safety pilots like you did during practice "

quote:

The FAA provided its denial letter and in the letter, it stated, "The FAA has considered the petition, and finds that granting an exemption from § 91.105(a) would not be in the public interest and cannot find that the proposed operation would not adversely affect safety."

Continuing, the FAA further explained the reasoning for the denial, saying, "The FAA does not evaluate these deficiencies in greater detail because the petitioner does not provide a sufficient public interest case. Additionally, granting the petitioner’s request for relief would be contrary to previous denials of requests for relief from the same regulation to allow the flight crew to leave the flight deck and airplane during the operation of the airplane so as to allow the airplane to simulate a crash landing.

Second, the FAA has determined that a grant of exemption is not in the public interest for the proposed operation. The petitioner states that he has been conducting the operation in compliance with FAA regulations by having an additional pilot on board the airplane designated as PIC while the airplane swap described in the petition for exemption occurs. Because the FAA cannot conclude that the operations for which relief is sought (i.e., an operation without a pilot in the airplane and at the controls) would not adversely affect safety, and because the petitioner can continue to perform this demonstration in compliance with FAA regulations by including an additional pilot for each airplane, there is no public interest in granting the exemption request."
