Shanghai is a shitshow, nobody is denying that, but it really is just Shanghai and immediate surroundings at this point in time and cases have been dropping the last week or so. The lockdowns have been very effective in the rest of the country for the past two years. Shenzhen is the third or fourth biggest city in the country, had an outbreak at the same time, and it did great. Timing is key when it comes to lockdowns and Shanghai was very slow to kick into gear compared to everywhere else.

There are problems that have been causing the lockdowns to be less effective than they could have been, such as the poor plumbing in older places spreading the virus, communal kitchens and bathrooms in poor areas, mass testing causing people to congregate, etc. They've been trying to address these issues by for example delivering food instead of having people use communal kitchens. Timing helps here too since it's much easier to keep a single building or xiaoqu under control than large districts even with these issues.

They haven't really been dropping though? They've been going down like a percent a day and then popped back up to 25k. You do a lockdown you expect to see them plummet rapidly because vectors of transmission should be hugely minimized

This is also probably true to an extent. No one knows the true numbers.

I wanted to point out that from what I've seen and heard from friends in the medical field (in Shanghai anyway) a lot of hospitals aren't at max capacity but unable to admit people due to covid-related rules and restrictions. If this is what's happening imo it's actually worse than the other scenario cuz it's just the bureaucracy blocking people from getting care they need. the real situation is probably a bit more in the middle tho.

Yeah that's about my read on it, too: it doesn't sound like the dreaded 'full healthcare system collapse' and even if you somewhat conspiratorially add a week or two to the outbreak timeline, it would still be very early for the healthcare system too be too swamped as severe covid cases tend to take 3-5 weeks to hit the most acute illness. I am kind of splitting hair because yeah if people can't get needed care, it doesn't make much difference to those people what term you use

There are still interesting posts in there from time to time, but it's run like a high school debate club with the most tedious "it's okay to debate the Holocaust from Hitler's perspective as long as everyone is respectful of the other opinions" wonks in charge.

This honestly would be so bad if it wasn't for the blatant malicious enforcement, but a petty mid-level administrator using their power to punish people who don't pay them "proper respect" via selectively enforcing obtuse rules is just perfect for the China thread.

I especially liked the, "You have to cite sources :colbert: wait not those sources " exchange

It doesn't rapidly plummet. Things like household contacts give it a surprising amount of staying power, and there are other avenues for infection between households and between the people who do have to go outside. Australia (esp. Melbourne) had some pretty harsh lockdowns (albeit not as harsh as Shanghai now) and it took ages to drop down.

I might be biased but the kinda georgia:north-flordia cultural zone is one of the most under-rated regional cultures in the country. I probably am biased because my dad grew up in Tennessee but I completely do not vibe with that state and so georgia is the closest I can get to a similar feel without actually having to deal with Tennessee

ABC news in Australia is currently doing a story that Beijing is under "impending lockdown" after they started mass testing.

Feel so sorry for everyone caught up in it. I know so many people who almost went mad under Melbourne's lockdowns, but they were nothing compared to how harsh China's are.

I mean, so far it's been:

~3 days of panic
~7 days of food uncertainty
~3 weeks of boring food
~1 month of boredom

So yeah, poo poo sucks, and if you're one of the people who got stuck without enough food, or (I am still privately convinced deliberately) left out of the welfare programs then that is legit nightmare territory, but for the majority of people it shouldn't be madness-inducing, just boring and frustrating.

My Chinese friend went to Shanghai two months ago for a few-day business meeting with a supplier. He was staying with a Shanghai-local coworker from their SH branch instead of having the company pay for a hotel. During that brief time, someone got the 'vid in that area and the whole community shut down and locked up, which caused my friend to miss his flight home. Once the community felt safe to open back up, the rest of the city started the madness it is currently going through, and he wasn't allowed to make any flights back. He and his coworker were stuck on those weird "one person per day/week" food ration trips until that was ended for them by the government. Now it has been two weeks and they haven't been able to leave to get food (which also doesn't exist anymore since everything is closed), and they are nearly out of all food they were barely able to stock up on since they were already locked up for weeks before this past one-month catastrophe started. I asked what they'll do and he responded "it's ok, I am trying to lose weight and now I don't have to try!" RIP.

Uhh, no, spring started during the spring festival in January when it was snowing. Did you not see the calendar? It says in big letters "SPRING FESTIVAL." That's when spring starts...just weeks after the winter solstice and months before the spring equinox when the sun crosses the equator and the days become noticeably longer.

Judging by the way the trees are cut, and the uniformity of the leaves, I am guessing those are plastic leaves.

If you mix it 1:1 with lovely beer, it makes both drinkable. Or at least you very quickly stop noticing the taste.
