The lockdowns have been very effective in the rest of the country for the past two years. Shenzhen is the third or fourth biggest city in the country, had an outbreak at the same time, and it did great. Timing is key when it comes to lockdowns and Shanghai was very slow to kick into gear compared to everywhere else. They haven't really been dropping though? They've been going down like a percent a day and then popped back up to 25k. You do a lockdown you expect to see them plummet rapidly because vectors of transmission should be hugely minimized Ailumao posted:This is also probably true to an extent. No one knows the true numbers. Yeah that's about my read on it, too: it doesn't sound like the dreaded 'full healthcare system collapse' and even if you somewhat conspiratorially add a week or two to the outbreak timeline, it would still be very early for the healthcare system too be too swamped as severe covid cases tend to take 3-5 weeks to hit the most acute illness. I am kind of splitting hair because yeah if people can't get needed care, it doesn't make much difference to those people what term you use Herstory Begins Now fucked around with this message at 21:32 on Apr 25, 2022 |

This honestly would be so bad if it wasn't for the blatant malicious enforcement, but a petty mid-level administrator using their power to punish people who don't pay them "proper respect" via selectively enforcing obtuse rules is just perfect for the China thread. I especially liked the, "You have to cite sources wait not those sources " exchange

Things like household contacts give it a surprising amount of staying power, and there are other avenues for infection between households and between the people who do have to go outside. Australia (esp. Melbourne) had some pretty harsh lockdowns (albeit not as harsh as Shanghai now) and it took ages to drop down.

Specifically, he started making GBS threads on Dolly Parton for saying something pro-BLM in August, 2020. He was shortly thereafter canceled and replaced. Tracy is loving incredible. Every time he starts going on about georgia football I hear southern georgia pour out of him. I live in North Florida, so essentially the same part of the world that squidbillies is lampooning.

I might be biased but the kinda georgia:north-flordia cultural zone is one of the most under-rated regional cultures in the country. I probably am biased because my dad grew up in Tennessee but I completely do not vibe with that state and so georgia is the closest I can get to a similar feel without actually having to deal with Tennessee

ABC news in Australia is currently doing a story that Beijing is under "impending lockdown" after they started mass testing. Feel so sorry for everyone caught up in it. I know so many people who almost went mad under Melbourne's lockdowns, but they were nothing compared to how harsh China's are.

I mean, so far it's been: ~3 days of panic ~7 days of food uncertainty ~3 weeks of boring food ~1 month of boredom So yeah, poo poo sucks, and if you're one of the people who got stuck without enough food, or (I am still privately convinced deliberately) left out of the welfare programs then that is legit nightmare territory, but for the majority of people it shouldn't be madness-inducing, just boring and frustrating.

my old roommate in Shanghai is on his 28th day of not leaving his actual apartment. no end in sight - he was able to get some food for hundreds and hundreds of RMB. he's like vice-CEO of a Chinese-American company so he's doing fine, but at this point you start to wonder how everyone who doesn't make six figures is doing. I'm just spitballing here, but I'm guessing it's "not great", then again I'm just a white racist sexpat loser in my home country so wat do I know

I'm just spitballing here, but I'm guessing it's "not great", then again I'm just a white racist sexpat loser in my home country so wat do I know My Chinese friend went to Shanghai two months ago for a few-day business meeting with a supplier. He was staying with a Shanghai-local coworker from their SH branch instead of having the company pay for a hotel. During that brief time, someone got the 'vid in that area and the whole community shut down and locked up, which caused my friend to miss his flight home. Once the community felt safe to open back up, the rest of the city started the madness it is currently going through, and he wasn't allowed to make any flights back. He and his coworker were stuck on those weird "one person per day/week" food ration trips until that was ended for them by the government. Now it has been two weeks and they haven't been able to leave to get food (which also doesn't exist anymore since everything is closed), and they are nearly out of all food they were barely able to stock up on since they were already locked up for weeks before this past one-month catastrophe started. I asked what they'll do and he responded "it's ok, I am trying to lose weight and now I don't have to try!" RIP. ninjoatse.cx posted:SPRING IS HERE Uhh, no, spring started during the spring festival in January when it was snowing. Did you not see the calendar? It says in big letters "SPRING FESTIVAL." That's when spring starts...just weeks after the winter solstice and months before the spring equinox when the sun crosses the equator and the days become noticeably longer. Judging by the way the trees are cut, and the uniformity of the leaves, I am guessing those are plastic leaves.

Soju is the 2nd worst popular alcohol, the first being baijiu of course. It's just half strength vodka with a dash of aspartame. If there's a bar in hell, it serves only soju. Not even Satan would open a baijiu-only bar, though.
