The peak of Fact Checking was when in the 2020 primary the fact check rear end in a top hat at washington post said that bernie's claim that the three richest families in america own more wealth than the bottom 50 percent was "half true" or something, because he was 100% correct on the facts, but a lot of the bottom half are so poor that they have zero or negative wealth. liberals were so in love with fact checking and think it's an automatic win so much that i remember in at least one of the 2016 debates hillary declined to challenge any of trump's bullshit and instead told everyone to go look at the fact checkers after the debate

Fact-checking is part of an obsession with The Rules, specifically the idea that adhering fastidiously to a rules-based order will protect us from chaos (it doesn't). I will use D&D as an example because it's perfect- there is an obsession with correctness, but with following correct procedure rather than accomplishing a correct outcome. Whatever outcome the rules actually dictate is not important to them as far as whether it creates suffering or if the problem is solved- these are the people who supported the war in Iraq until it was revealed there were no WMDs- from that point they were against it, only because the United States was no longer following the rules. Student loan forgiveness- sorry! The rules say that these people have to live in poverty and have their opportunities permanently foreclosed until all that money is paid back. A correct outcome would be to forgive the debt and allow them to regain their financial autonomy; but the correct procedure according to the rules dictates they must live out their lives in privation, so no deal. Trump was upsetting to them because he broke conventions and rules consistently, showing of how little restraint they actually are upon someone without the worship and respect for the same set of rules they have. Likewise, Bernie was upsetting because he threatened to use power for objective good rather than to simply enforce the rules of a broken system as Biden currently is. So if you're reading this thread you can likely see past the bullshit and fact checkers don't really enter into the equation for you. The purpose is to enforce an orthodox line of thinking upon people for whom the formulation of the argument matters more than what it promotes, and ensures nobody with the dedication to hold themselves to the rules will stray too far from the flock.
