Or more likely, they can drag themselves through a Kafkaesque system intended to make it harder for victims to get any kind of payment, for years, to get a pittance while being pilloried by the nation's press, while being forced to relive their relative being essentially murdered by the state. If they so choose.

MOT is only every 2 years in France so that isn't ridiculous. I bet it costs more to pay someone who understands the no doubt out of date software to change the system than it'll save though. And presumably the garages will lose business and have to let people go?

Rather polite way of putting it. He cancelled himself by stormed off his own show because a black presenter had the temerity to call him out on his racist claptrap. Literally couldn’t stand being argued back to by a black man.

I'm not a fascist. I'm a priest. Fascists dress up in black and tell people what to do.
MOT is every year here and 70 euros minimum. I have driven long enough that I remember it was 40-50 FIM which in euro should be around 7-10 euros. Of course that was before we privatized the MOT.

A couple of possibilities (and this really depends how recent they are)

Bookaid:

https://bookaid.org/

Freecycle:

Or, bundle them into relevant groupings (theme / level etc) and advertise on Freecycle. I had to do this when I left the UK for a few years.
I bundled some up as 'suitable for someone studying surveying' 'suitable for someone studying a-level maths' or whatever.

Colleges/Unis:

If near a college or uni might advertise them as freebies for students (maybe near the start of the academic year would be better unless she is really desperate to get them gone now!)

Unless she's prepared for a lot of stress, little point in trying to sell them.

Put them on eBay at a very low price for whoever wants them. Give them to a local used bookstore who will probably do the same. Donate them to your local library (providing they're not hardcover or too large). Scan them and stick them on an academic torrent site.

Just in case people haven't heard about the workfare lawsuit:

Wiki posted:

The Department for Work and Pensions appealed to the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, it also drafted new regulations to ensure the continuance of the work placements. During the period of the scheme which had been ruled unlawful, perhaps 300,000 people had had benefits of an average of around £530-70 withheld,[3] totalling around £130m which the DWP was potentially obliged to repay if Reilly and Wilson won their case in the Supreme Court. The Government sought to avoid having to make these repayments by retrospectively changing the law through the Jobseekers (Back to Work Schemes) Bill, which became law on 26 March 2013.[4][5][6][7]

e: And yes they did win, after many appeals, much good it did to any of them:

wiki posted:

On 19 March 2013, before the appeal to the Supreme Court was completed, the Government also passed the Jobseekers (Back to Work Schemes) Act 2013 to retrospectively make its unlawful sanctions against benefits claimants legal, in order to avoid potentially having to repay unlawfully withheld benefits payments of around £130m.

In response to the law-change, the law firm acting for Reilly and Wilson, Public Interest Lawyers, lodged submissions to the Supreme Court, arguing that 'the actions of the secretary of state … represent a clear violation of article 6 [of the European Convention on Human Rights] and the rule of law, as an interference in the judicial process by the legislature'.[12]

On Friday 4 July 2014, Mrs Justice Lang, sitting at the High Court in London, ruled that the retrospective nature of the legislation interfered with the "right to a fair trial" under Article Six of the Convention on Human Rights.[2][13] The government appealed this ruling, but on 29 April 2016, the Court of Appeal upheld the previous court's decision; Lord Justice Underhill, summarising the court's findings, emphasised that although the Act was incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights, 'it is up to the Government, subject to any further appeal, to decide what action to take in response'.[14]

Something something rule of law, :laffo:.

I’m in a similar situation and I was just going to take them to a charity shop, is this a bad plan?

Academic books are a gently caress for coming out with new revisions every year which are 99% identical to the old one but which are also “required” for whatever course, so I wasn’t sure if e.g the Uni library would even want them.

We were always getting academic books in the charity bookstore I volunteered at, no one ever bought them. Ebay / Amazon them probably your best bet.

Did any of you have lecturers who would assign their own book as required reading for the course, even if it wasn't actually required. Happened to my partner loads during her time at uni, nice side hustle I suppose.
