Disclaimer: I am not so much a ""leftist"" as I am a...uh...there are no words, so here, I'll just pull this out of my rear end: Banksian Saganist.

Humans are...sort of on track for Space exploration. We have no real "commercial" reason for it, but we're sort of hitting the point where we have a few Howard Hughes types with enough money to gently caress around with the concept, albeit obviously nowhere near enough interest and %global engineering focus to really get the reactor of its potential for our social and economic expansion fired over, so to speak.

The start of the Space Exploration era is well within our lifetimes, but we do have some things at home to take care of first, such as:

* Making sure the Planet, and us as its caretakers, especially biosphere-wise) are physically ready for exploration, and potential contact (not necessarily "aliens," but foreign matter at all, such as frozen bacteriums and any harvested or mined material. Our atmosphere might oxidize something in fascinating new ways, you never know.)
* Ready ourselves socially.
* FULL international cooperation on it, so that it is background to all nation's other business, which would hopefully give it a perception of being a "safe" industry to work in, important because socially and "economically" we will need focal industries while we transition through the different stages of late capitalism that we've been shedding as practice since Sumeria.
* Making sure our *infrastructure* worldwide actually supports that sort of launch activity. We already have some trouble delivering windmill turbine blades, we might need more space for the manufacturing operations alone, much less the delivery of their production to different assembly or launch sites.
* Pilots licenses need to be more common and flying more commonly understood, not as a profession, but as a capability or discipline, like welding or programming. This is not just to have an available pilot supply, it is so our technology ratchets faster because we overall have a better understanding and so can more commonly deliberate fine points.

And that's just for the earth side of things. In space:
* Waaaay better designs on ships, I do not think from a durability standpoint I would really want to be on anything we have on the drawing board right now for several months at a time.
* A single loving clue about the NECESSARY span of our development to support solar system scale human operations of any kind.
* To consider that Space Trucking will be a very awesome and well paying career, and that you should see that from this moment to lol at the whole possible bloom of social, economic, and generally *human* change that its certainty implies along the way.
* We need space TBMs, too.

The ionizing radation on jupiter's moons for example is so intense that as far as I'm aware NASA isn't quite sure how to harden even a lifeless chunk of electronics against being annihilated.

Out there, beyond the safety of earth's biosphere, ozone layer, atmosphere and magnetosphere are the primordial forces of the cosmos. We are ants on a tiny island in a pond surrounded by a vast raging wildfire.

Earth is super capitalist with what we’re led to believe is a representative republic with an insanely powerful executive, they never go into specifics on the political structure but we know Mars is a command economy, belters get even less political examination but it’s safe to say they’re different flavors of left anarchist/mutualist with all the idealism and infighting that implies

well Martian opportunists hand-selected someone to fund and arm to resist the UN while basically leaving the surface of Mars alone so they’d definitely choose someone like Marco, it’s straight out of the imperialist playbook. they couldn’t choose any of the Belter leaders readers/viewers were familiar with like Drummer or Fred Johnson cause they’d have immediately realized they were being played and used it to their advantage

Going from the books not the show here but I'm pretty sure belters were basically libertarians without the pedophilia.

The only thing keeping them from being the worst faction is being the victims of colonialism, so you end up siding with them emotionally even though there are no good guys in the expanse.

Though tbh I'm not sure if that's what the author was going for, the entire work reeks of neoliberalism from every pore. Yes I read the whole thing anyway.
