No original research. Ask John Romero.

Having an alt do it, well maybe. Gotta play by the convoluted rules either way.

The article about Jimmy Wales has, or had, his birth date as a date that Jimbo himself claimed was incorrect, even though it came from a reliable source, and there was a huge edit war over whether Jimbo should be allowed to source his own birth date in the article.

Does anyone else remember ZBots? They were a short lived attempt to cash in on the collectible toys market in the mid '90s but you rarely if ever hear anything about them today

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

I had the one with the saw blades and lost him at a dollar movie theater. I was devastated.

I remember these! I had the Megabot with the poseable firing missile arms :allears:. And about a dozen of the Z-Bots besides.

I really wanted that guy but I vividly remember my mom saying a /!\$20/!\ toy was way too expensive. Weird considering all the legos I had.

I don't know how much we really align but I'm also a tv-raised kid who watched WAY THE gently caress too much TV growing up.
My parents weren't carnies but I was still a latch key kid who would watch TV in my parent's room cuz that was the only room with air conditioning.

I was forced to watch poo poo sitcoms on one of the 3 channels our area could get as a child, I think it was about spending time together as a family doing what my parents wanted to do.

I don’t watch tv as an adult and my parents still don’t get the Matilda jokes I made at them at the time.

Out of all those drinks back then (especially loving Fruitopia), Snapple Rain was the least cloying, so this doesn’t bode well for the rest.

Oh yeah, I was all about those after TMNT had run its course. I assume they must have been relatively cheap if my family was willing to get so many of them. I also had the ones from Burger King and most of the little offshoots like Mini-Zs and Military Combots, as mentioned here:
http://www.m2museum.com/Zbots/Zbots.htm

I feel like there must have been some holy grail playset that was considered too expensive, but maybe not -- I think this might have been the one case where I was actually allowed to get all of them.

I don't remember ever owning more than a single ZBot; pretty sure it was either Zolord or Emperon. I don't think it was an issue of money so much as not having the patience to collect all of the little figurines. But I obsessively collected Mad Super Specials at that age, so go figure.

There was a giant one that was shaped like a sphere on treads but the big playset had a ramp that you could put them inside and launch them down like a top

Yea that poo poo was funny. The idea that jimmy from the suburbs is going to be recruited into the Crips or the Bloods was so common in the 80s and 90s. Its up there with being offered free drugs by random people constantly.

I was thinking the other day about the concept of a Day Trader. There were a bunch of workplace shootings in the 90s and they always seemed to be some day trader who lost everything because it was a lovely way to make a living and required you to be smart to play the stock market on a daily basis and make money. Do people still do that or do they get let some accounting firm handle their investments?

GWBBQ

It wasn't recruiting they were worried about, it was that there were occasional fights between kids and the fact that kids from urban areas hung out there. Being the 90s, that meant that your white children would be robbed or caught in the crossfire when they started shooting. To my knowledge, there has never been a gun fired in the mall although there have been a couple of armed robberies.

Unfortunately for my 90s upbringing by scared middle class parents, one of the kids in my primary school did actually find some discarded drugs on the side of the road and tried some thinking they were candy. He got the full front page large font treatment in the local newspaper if I remember correctly.
