Well for the first time ever i think i’ve got the hang of JA2.

And in typical fashion it’s with an IMP character that i frustratedly made as a joke and two beginning mercs that wiped out my starting money.

Now i’m loaded up to the tits on guns and i’m crushing the enemy, maybe i’ll even get close to finishing the game for once.

I always got bored of the endgame and restarted. I loved the scrambling for guns and supplies and money of the start and the balance of midgame but endgame always kind of ended up as “you’re either steamrolling or getting hosed”

Seems like Igor & Ivan are due for drastic revisioning if Jagged Alliance 3 ever comes out.
If not totally rewriting their backgrounds, maybe make them competent vs normal enemies from early game to mid-game but fold up to Larry Roachburn's "relapsed stats" facing elite army units.

I don't know about that. They could easily be comtemporised as good/elite soldiers who got fed up of the incompetence and corruption of their country's army and went private. Which isn't exactly too different from their previous story.

Like I said, revising their backstories for the in-development JA3 is probably a good idea.
Of course Jagged Alliance 3 ever coming out or being good in comparison to JA2 is doubtful, since at least one of the developers of JA3 admitted to never actually playing Jagged Alliance 2.

TBF, they're both Russian expats who got the gently caress out of the military before it went to poo poo.

Reading through quotes, Ivan will curse any broken weapons with "you buy this junk from the old Russian Army".

Eh, screw it. I'm just happy this thread is back from the dead, no disagreement with any of takes on Ivan or Igor.

Ivan was always good in JA1 & JA2. Meanwhile Igor seemed cursed to die like Hurl whenever Fidel is nearby in JA1, consistently dying in A.I.M. updates during my JA2/JA2:S & JA2 1.13 playthroughs when I don't have him in my team.

IVan Dolvich: I so bad at fighting. This reminds me of the illegal 2022 invasion of Ukraine in which all of my comrades were killed and Russia was humiliated.

Also, I think a lot of people forget that JA2 is over twenty years old at this point. Like Igor would be a minimum of 45 year old, and, since Ivan is based off Schwarzenegger, would be pushing his 70s at this point.

I'd always figured that if there ever was a legit JA3, it would probably be Ivan's niece or granddaughter or something named Irina or Ivanka.

Not saying that it shouldn't have him, but he definitely would be an older and maybe different character. Same with Igor, I would probably think his English would improve over the last twenty years. And I'd feel like you'd be losing out if you don't have a third member of the I-team.

The best way would be to have old commie diehard Ivan, a more westernized and hypercaptialist third-gen Dolvich, and then having Igor bridging the gap between the two. Maybe have it where Ivan hates the third-gen Dolvich to start but becomes friendly as they work together.

(Also, I found out "Dolvich" isn't so much a family name but a patronym, like "son/daughter of Dol", so maybe have them be Igorvich or Igorvichina. I'll admit, that probably didn't dawn on Sir-Tech when they were coming up with these names)

Oh I know. I was joking because Pops wasn't very good, but it's hilarious that he was there.

Wasn't he the ultimate owner of the funeral flowers website in JA2? God, I love that you could send flowers to Deidranna.

Flowers to Deidranna in JA2 was good, sending flowers to Elliot each time you took over a defended sector was god-mode trolling. Never tried sending flowers to Pops himself or to any of my mercenaries though, guess that's something to try when I attempt Deidranna Lives! for the 10th?/11th? time.

It is the case with regular 1.13 as well, even if most of the bias is with guns that were around in the 2000's.

Tbh I think it’s fine since the original game was just a modern warfare game that only inadvertently became a period piece later on so it’s not like having future guns goes against the style of the game or anything

Deidrianna uses Warsaw Pact weapons for her low level soldiers, NATO for regulars and presumably western mercs for the black shirts, right? I remember them either outright saying or at least it being heavily implied that she has cia/American backing

The bug\alien monsters have red hats and when you reach the king (now it's male, he will comment about not having sex) he will spend 10 minutes monologuing about making Arulco great again and all the characters will turn to the camera and say "WHO IS THE REAL MONSTER?"

IMO the main thing to do with weapons is to keep weird prototypes besides the rocket rifles out of the game and stick to designs that actually would have been in commercial production circa 1998 for anyone who wants to do a more serious remaster of it.

George RR Fartin
Apr 16, 2003

I think if the prototypes had prototype reliability (ie: none), it would be kinda neat to use them for the five seconds until a case gets irretrievably stuck in the action or whatever. The flip side of the beginning game balance of "these are all dirty pistols and shotguns", that sort of thing. Like, it wouldn't be worth it but if you want to fire the forty existing caseless rounds from the G11 and roll the dice it doesn't blow up, have at it

that’s true if they were doing a remaster of the base game but 1.13 is basically the only stupidly detailed gun porn strategy game out there so I’m ok with there being more guns even if it doesn’t make sense

That being said, if it was a sequel or remake that took place in the same time period and setting, the base game should probably restrict the guns available to fit the setting

It would make most sense that it would still be a sequel but set to a few years after it, most likely during the early days of the great war on terror.

I watched this for the first time last night (it's on Plex so free to watch with commercials) and yes it's basically Jagged Alliance meets Seven Samurai in an over-the-top 90s action movie with awful writing and covering just about every stereotype and trope in the book. It's hilariously bad and I hope one day it gets the MST3k treatment.

- The "retired" mercenary begrudgingly accepting one last mission
- The "getting the old team back together" montage
- The no-nonsense warrior woman who is a woman that does warrior stuff and most of her lines are quips like "Special forces? Just another boy's club."
- Two villains who are permanently in a state of coked-up roid rage, including Evil Colin Farrell
- Also some slimey rich people villains
- Lots of Carl Gustav rocket launchers and people pointing out that they are Carl Gustav rocket launchers and not some lesser type of rocket launchers
