So I got tired of Elden Ring after like 5 playthroughs but I still wanted some high fantasy Hack and Slash. I heard God of War 2018 was getting a sequel this year and I'd never played it before so I figured I'd try it out.

Here's my verdict:

God of War 2018 is an incredibly beautiful game with a compelling story, a rich cast of well-realized characters, cool looking and intensely satisfying combat, and some of the worst loving encounter design I have ever seen in a video game.

Seriously, I think that game should be taught in schools as a textbook example of bad difficulty. Hard fights in GoW '18 are not hard because they require tense reflexes or careful planning, they're hard because you have to beat on every single thing for like 50 years before it dies, whereas apparently Kratos has contracted brittle bone disease since the last game and will die if anything so much as breathes on him. Which everything will. From a distance, too!

Hey, do you like projectile spam?

Do you like projectile spam from enemies you can't see, because they're all actively trying to flank you and the camera is super glued to your left rear end cheek and will not pull back even if you put a gun to its mother's head?

Well congratulations, you will be in hog heaven if you get this game because that's pretty much their entire design philosophy. Every fight needs at least two annoying loving piece of poo poo projectile spammers. Sometimes you think you're going to have a miniboss fight without them but NOPE! There they are! They were waiting to spawn until halfway through the fight, because go gently caress yourself. You can't see them, because the camera is not allowed to move more than three feet away from Kratos's right shoulder, because God forbid a third person action game let you see what's behind you.

Coming off of Elden Ring, it really, really brings into stark relief just how much other studios are lacking in terms of their combat design.

This sounds a lot like you picked Give Me God of War difficulty, and if so, lmao

Something about making the players feel like they are constantly improving by miniscule amounts to keep them on the treadmill

At some point I just left GoW 2018 on the story difficulty or whatever. For a while I was only dropping it down when things got too tedious, but at some point it stopped being worth turning it back up. Was honestly a lot more fun when things actually died in a reasonable amount of time.

I love that there are aspects of GoW'18 where you can see the developers backpedaling their own design decisions in real time. There's a fight early on in the game where Atreus keeps getting grabbed and you have to free him. It is, several hours later, the one and only time that has happened in the entire game. It's like the developers immediately realized that despite its aspirations of being the Big Dad Game, actually making you babysit this loving kid is a great way to make players hate him, so ever since then he's been basically invincible. So invincible, in fact, that you can use him to cheese fights.

The fight that inspired my previous post is against Revenants, teleporting projectile spammers that you can't even hit normally; kiddo has to shoot them first. Even then, they can slip out of your combos and teleport behind you and be launching a projectile before you turn around. Their projectiles home so aggressively that they will go around and sometimes even straight through walls to get to you. And this particular encounter is what the game considers a "hard optional fight" which of course means that there are two of them and they both have health for days while every single attack they do will instantly kill you from full health on every difficulty except the very easiest, where you can take a whopping two attacks. They can kill you easily... but they can't do poo poo to Sonny Boy, so technically, the easiest and best way to win that fight is to back out of the room, put up your shield, pull up youtube and watch a nice long video while you hammer the button that makes Atreus fire arrows for ten straight minutes (on the easiest difficulty).

What engaging game design! :downsbravo: Well, I mean, it did make me love the kid, so I guess it has that going for it.

God of War 2018 is carefully constructed to be all one continuous, unbroken shot. I assume I learned about this from some video game press thing, because when you actually play the game, it constantly blarts countless weapons, armors, runes, enchantments and skill points at you to manage on an entirely separate menu screen, disrupting any sense of continuity you may have had.

It must have been a lot of hard work to make a big open world game with cutscenes and setpieces and fancy graphics not have any camera cuts or loading screens. What a shame.

credburn posted:

I was going to post this in a different thread but I went so far off topic that it no longer belongs there, but here's an anecdote about how I was a real lovely thirteen year-old Everquest griefer. Just this once, though.

In classic Everquest, circa 1998, there would be a lot of high level people who would journey to the towns and often get slain by a guard. You lost everything if you couldn't get back to your corpse, which could be really hard if you're having to do so naked. Often, people would send messages to people within the towns (usually very low level or even brand new characters) to "drag" their corpses to where the zones began, thus allowing the high level characters to retrieve their inventory. The command that allowed players to "drag" the body was /consent; "dragging" in this case was actually a means of moving the corpse by accessing its inventory from a distance; it would warp the corpse a few feet to you.

So I was playing on a roleplaying server, as a Dark Elf Shadowknight, and this dumb paladin trusted me to bring his corpse back to the start but instead I sold all his things to low level characters for chump change. The Everquest police showed up, literally a guy in a cowel and told me I had to give it back, but I argued (in character) that I am a Dark Elf Shadowknight, surely one of the last things a human paladin should just totally be trusting. I was given a warning but the Paladin was temporarily banned because he wouldn't stop sending me angry messages, filled with a lot of "I KNOW WHERE U LIVE IRL AND FUKN KILL U"

I like to think he also shares the story of one of the most immersive roleplaying experiences, his encounter with the sneaky level 3 Shadowknight who tricked him.

My mate just used to make a level 1 high elf and train the guards to the teleport spires all the time

Teaser

Reveal

Well, that aligns with the vibes I was getting. Which was, like, "normal" kinda vibes.
I also beat Elden Ring and Malenia last night. After playing here and there since release, it took me 140 hours to see credits. It’s really an amazing game and it does so many things right that it’s no surprise it’s going to be a generation-defining game. Maybe one day I’ll play it again, but I don’t have the patience to put off Strangers of Paradise any longer.

I empathize with Yuji Naka if this is true, but an extra six months would have not made Balan Wonderworld good. Too much of what was wrong with it was embedded in its core design philosophy. Even making it so you just had a jump button all the time to give you two buttons to press instead of one would require every level to be redesigned to account for having a jump at all times and several costumes whose only purpose was to give you a jump to be either reworked completely or removed.
