this one is in person, it runs till Friday and they expect to have tallies a few days later. It's much smaller than the previous warehouse (8000+ at that one, this new one has ~1500) so counting should go faster?

Could be another victory announcement on May day

isn't UFCW pretty lovely and almost useless having been infiltrated by big biz for at least a couple of decades? most ufcw workers (like safeway) are still super exploited and pretty much every contract the last decade has been garbage like splitting off tiers and creating more exploitation for new employees wwhile then grinding everyone down

i guess it depends on the local chapters a lot too. at least the leg work of at least being unionized is already done, so now they have a chance to turn it around and actually get some good agreements out of it but they really need to purge all the garbage oughts/2010s leaders out of positions of power.

if your local IWW is doing good stuff then sure but i don't know of meaningful workplaces that have active IWW union status. their attempt at Voodoo Donuts failed, iirc.

UFCW 3000 needs a huge rank-and-file movement to actually get good contracts for sure

this crying tactic has become (or always has been?) common recently. during the Amazon captive audience meetings they'll have someone on stage start crying when workers raise objections to the company lies which just triggers a very natural emotional response to back off. It's deeply cynical but over a zoom call you can just mute that poo poo lol

Yeah if they showed me something like that at Amazon, especially as part of a big meeting, I'd be hard pressed not to burst out laughing and start shouting "Your tears give us strength!" or "Boo-hoo! Pay us a living loving wage!"

I'm not sure which is more unsettling, if they're faking it or if they genuinely feel hurt and scared on behalf of their corporate employers

381 for - 618 against, the union fails to win. Not the end of ALU's efforts but it's a bitter loss, two ins in a row would have made for tremendous momentum.

the biggest boon for unionizing the other warehouses will be that first contract, unfortunately it's going to be a while.

i hope they can do it. i've been pessimistic, but they've proven everyone wrong over and over. hearing a little more about their ground game, which was a little secretive before the first election win, i'm willing to believe a little. amazon has a lot of tools though

always more to do

the contract battle is going to be ferocious, very curious how that will shake out. ALU is holding a convention this summer I believe with a call for warehouses from anywhere in the country to get together and learn how to form organizing committees and build campaigns in their own warehouses, that event will matter more in the long-term than this initial loss, hopefully. Not that it doesn't sting.

Getting a BU to organize is a lot easier when you can wave an in-effect contract at them and show them what organization actually accomplishes.

You couldn't grok my race car, but you dug the roadside blur.
My union is doing phone banking to get more people signed up.

I reached out to people I've worked with at least, got a couple sign ups. I really really don't like the idea of hitting people on the phone or even Teams to sell this because conflict and rejection frankly terrifies me and always has. My workplace isn't even anti-union and I'm pretty sure management doesn't care that we're doing this, but still.

Any tips? How can I sell the union better without sounding like a bot or telemarketer?

Tom Smykowski

What the hell is wrong with you people?
Let them do the talking.

Bring up and recent union actions and ask what they think or how it applies to them ("did you hear about how so-and-so was going to get written up until the steward stepped in? Do you think the boss was fair? That ever happen to you?").

Ask about past union experiences and relate your union to the good stuff and contrast it with the bad stuff. It gets easy when they say "the union at my last job just took dues and never talked to me" because you're right there talking to them.

A lot of the people you'll call also don't like conflict and rejection so even if they'll end up not signing up, they'll still be nice enough.
