Actually, do possums make good pets? I know raccoons are alright pets if you can keep them stimulated and not overfeed them but the only things I know about possums is that they carry their babies on their back and they're marsupials.

The heartbreak about having one as a pet is they only live around a year or so apparently

That is sad, but also surprisingly short. I wonder what's up with that. Wikipedia says that they may live up to 4 years in captivity. They do not appear to make good pets. https://www.opossum.org/pet.html quote:We search for words to tell people how difficult it is to keep opossums healthy in captivity, but there are really no words for it. The fact is, it is practically impossible. Many of their needs are simply unknown to us, and they are designed by nature to be short-lived animals. Ethically, you are imprisoning him. He is not domestic, he is a wild animal. His pleasant nature may make him appear to be satisfied, but the constant stress of captivity takes its toll in the form of immune suppression, and makes them susceptible to several bacterial diseases, and things can go very bad very quickly. It doesn't matter how many web pages or Internet groups you've found that you think will help you. Some have worthwhile information, some are worthless, and how will you know the difference? Let him go have his life in the wild.

I knew someone when I was a kid who had a pet skunk, and they're reputedly actually pretty good pets. The big problem is that they just aren't well understood biologically, so it's hard to find a vet who can work with them and finding a good diet for a pet skunk involves a lot of guesswork.

Skunks can certainly be good pets but there's way more to consider that most seem to realize. They need a large enclosed space because they will chew and claw the poo poo out of stuff. Also, they are omnivores so their poo poo smells much like a humans and it can be a hassle to box train them. Also, they're more on the cat scale than a dog. There's a good chance it won't like you, no matter what you do.

Yes, they can make good pets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wz7GqNCkctU The main problem with possums is that, much like octopuses, even though they're very sweet and intelligent that have an extremely short life span.
