Urgh, just got asked to look at a friend's bathroom light and it's some kind of loving weird proprietary bendy fluorescent that I don't know how to detach or find a replacement for. Maybe on amazon or something? Kinda tempted to tell her to pull the thing out and replace it with an LED fitting.

A thousand years in hell for the reprobate who decided to fit a fluorscent light fitting in 2012. It's not even a CFT because it has an external ballast that's almost bigger than the bloody tube is.

Wilko may be your best bet, they are about £10, and plug in and out easily, 8f it's the bulb I'm thinking of.

This is the correct answer. I bet those custom tubes cost more than a whole LED luminaire now.

e: ^ Maybe about £5 less then

That was also my thinking tbh, but I 1. have never done that myself and 2. it's a bathroom fitting so more worried about getting it right with earthing etc, and 3. I'm colourblind so electrics terrify me.

Will see if I can get a tube for her at least, weird shaped little bastard it is, looks almost like an old electric hob, center mount with the tube running around the outside, will go and look the part number up and see how much it costs and she can see if she wants to call a sparky.

This is the one I got, it's a bit bright for my small bathroom, but it's fully waterproof and double insulated so no earth and I think those type of ballasts are bridge rectified so it doesn't matter which one of the holes you put live and neutral in but also I think you're not supposed to say that (these days, elf and safety, metal dustbins etc)

Huh, if it's something I can replace easily that might be a decent idea. I don't suppose more light would hurt either.

2D CFL, the plastic socket on the luminaires are notorious for perishing from the heat of the lamp so it might want entirely replacing.

this might be more up your alley if you're unsure, just swap the old lamp for the new one.

Also ignore the bit where it shows someone taping two wires together lol, it's not actually that terrible, there's a real terminal block on top.

e: ^^ I require stadium illumination for my making GBS threads sudukos. That and it was the only light of roughly the same size that was next day delivery and the previous luminaire exploded while I was using the facilities.

It's like those, but round, not square. And yeah from the looks of it the thing has perished near the plastic mount, all burned out there where the tube meets the plastic bit. That was sort of why I was thinking a new fixture might be better because fluorescents have so much that likes to go wrong with them.

I had a bunch of those. Absolute shite, especially in sealed bathroom lights.
Replaced it with a similar size/shape complete LED unit for about <£20 from Amazon and it is much better.

I'm on the realist get the Tories out bandwagon, don't really mind who that means voting for. You seem far far more comfortable with the right wing upper class criminals doing even more damage and staying in power than me.

If that makes me a centrist it puts you somewhere to the right of Thatcher.

The current Labour Party is led by someone who covered up MI5 agents who ‘lost’ someone to a Moroccan black site where they were beaten and had their cock razorbladed. Someone who tried to extradite an autistic young man so relentlessly that Theresa loving May had to step in because it was too perverse even for her. Someone who, when a young man was shot in the back in a crowded tube, made sure that the polis were well protected from any real repercussions into the many, myriad flaws structurally embedded into them.

Voting for labour now isn’t just the horse voting for the knacker. It’s the horse voting to knacker all the other horses, too.
