Tex Avery posted:It's a shelter for inspectors to ride on the front end while the locomotive was being tested. One page I found reported that a guy named Lewis Schofield was riding up front on that locomotive when a super heater tube burst, killing Schofield. Specifically they're called indicator shelters. That one in the pic is quite sophisticated, and I guess was a properly made piece of kit that was presumably kept aside and adapted to fit each loco as needed (I guess the metal 'corners' with the windows were permanent, and they were joined by the wooden planks which depended on the width and shape of the loco frame). Most of them look like half of a garden shed or an outhouse perched on the buffer beam. They housed the equipment used for producing indicator diagrams, which required gear attached directly to the loco's cylinders and valve gear. Later on they also fitted equipment for monitoring the superheater, smokebox draught, exhaust back pressure, oil flow etc. Engineers would ride on the buffer beam to monitor and adjust the equipment. The shelter was needed for reasons of public decency to shield the travelling public from the sight of their enormous balls.

What's the reason for the sudden change in sound 11 seconds in? The local diesel-electric commuter trains did that too and I could never work it out.

GotLag posted:What's the reason for the sudden change in sound 11 seconds in? The local diesel-electric commuter trains did that too and I could never work it out. There are power electronics converting DC, or rectified single phase AC into 3 phase AC with variable frequency. The sound you hear are the pulse width modulation systems, that turn the rectified voltage into 3 separate sine waves again. Why the frequency of the PWM changes, and not only the width of the pulses, that i don't know. I do know that you can program an ICE 3 EMU to buzz the german national anthem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PV2E66JNKpU And that the Taurus locomotives are programmed in such a way that they play an actual musical scale, probably just for the sake of making a pleasant noise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNxh2bMWPOQ And those things make all kinds of weird sounds when there is wheel slip. Program them with a jazz scale and they could sound even funkier i reckon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZkOfJzkWXA&t=69s

Here in the UK the Class 323 EMU is well-known for its AC equipment sounding like a 1980s F1 grid getting the green light when they pull away: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OD1ZDbs44ww

Cross posting from the "Dumb poo poo Your Work Does" thread:Tex Avery posted:American railroads are so god awful right now that, as we speak, the CEOs of four out of the five major railroads that operate in the US are sitting in a hearing with the Surface Transportation Board to explain the fuckery. They've been providing such terrible service to customers AND driving away employees at a record high rate of turnover that the chairman of the board didn't give said CEOs a choice, but rather TOLD them they had to be there. The one railroad whose CEO wasn't required to show up only got a pass because the railroad was bought by a Canadian company a few months ago, and the STB is giving them a chance to clean up instead of punishing the new owners for dumb poo poo the old management did.

I have a single friend who works for a Class II, and from him and everything else I gather, Precision Railroading is college-boy for cutting costs to the bone in order to absolutely maximize short term profit margins whilst absolutely destroying long term company health and customer relationships. Am I out of line in my estimation?

I remember when he died people were like "good, gently caress him" He started pushing this bullshit back when he was at CP, which wrecked them, then went to CSX and wrecked them, too. I'd piss on the grave of E. Hunter Harrison if I was given the chance because he absolutely ruined railroading. EDIT: tried to look up where he's buried just in case I'm ever in the neighborhood, and I can't find a drat thing. There's probably a good reason for this. Hello. I recently applied for driver role, passed the initial assessments, (scaat + mini, raat, trfs, trp, rwce, vse and others) had an interview with HR and passed that, and then recently had an interview with the line managers. It's not in the bag yet as have to hear back from them to see if they approve of me for medical. Initial locomotive training is nearly 10 months, classroom, sim and supervised training. If I am successful can anybody offer insight into how demanding this is? I am currently doing a part time university degree online and am unsure if it's feasible to continue this while also learning to be a train driver.

Europe has a ton of different countries. It makes a big difference whether you're gonna be a train driver in Hungary or whether you're gonna do it in Germany. Or the Netherlands, where you can cross the country multiple times on a day and still end up at your home station that day.
