It is true. Deuterium has no curies. Drink enough and you will eventually die.

Due to the kinetic isotope effect, deuterium is actually too slow to participate in many metabolic reactions. You will get quite sick and likely die in a week or two if you drink nothing but D2O.

ERM... Actually I have stellar scores on the surveys, and every year students tell me that my classes are the best ones they’ve ever taken.

I understand that the slightly shallower bond angle of D2O, and thus the reduced strength of hydrogen bonding that is available, also messes with a lot of biological reactions in subtle ways.

You CAN drink heavy water, the amount you'd have to drink is about the same as what you'd need to drink for water intoxication.

You'd have to ingest it daily, without any access to any other fluids. But yeah not something you should do frequently.

Yeah this. If you are drinking other fluids, your body is going to largely be fine.

quote:

Byers began taking several doses of Radithor per day, believing it gave him a "toned-up feeling", but stopped in October 1930 (after taking some 1400 doses) when that effect faded. He lost weight and had headaches, and his teeth began to fall out. In 1931, the Federal Trade Commission asked him to testify about his experience, but he was too sick to travel so the commission sent a lawyer to take his statement at his home; the lawyer reported that Byers's "whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth and most of his lower jaw had been removed" and that "All the remaining bone tissue of his body was disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull."[6]

His death on March 31, 1932, was attributed to "radiation poisoning" using the terminology of the time, but it was due to cancers, not acute radiation syndrome.[4][7] He is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a lead-lined coffin.

Yeah once you replace 25% of your normal hydrogen, iirc

One of my favorite side effects from this is that D2O can replace the fluid in your inner ears. And because it's just a bit heavier, it can gently caress up your sense of balance.

note that having below-normal deuterium levels in your water can also cause changes in cell growth

Naturally occurring deuterium is essential for the normal growth rate of cells

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8428617/

to the point where deuterium depletion is studied as part of cancer treatment. It's also promoted by a bunch of whackos as a fringe therapy
