It destroys competition and allows them to amass a large chunk of talent that they want to hold on to
they will fire most of the executive level (probably a huge chunk of that operating loss) and will fire whoever they don't want, maybe even kill the brand itself

The Athletic moved the Devils beat writer and then hired Shayna Goldman who's quite good actually but from a more analytics pov -- wish they had both of those things but now they'll probably have neither!

They were paying a *lot* of writers, and a fair number of big name writers that were commanding six (maybe in some cases seven) figure salaries. And a much greater number of people involved in the editing and publishing process, most of whom were doubtless poorly paid but it does add up. All that's before executive salaries and perks, which like any other company is where most of the money goes. I would have believed an even higher number for annual operating losses.

Anyway the goal from the very beginning was to get bought out, and mission accomplished.

They hired way too many people for way too much on the hopes people want to pay for sports coverage. Some idiots do, but not enough.

They also regularly run $1/month subscription deals. I take it the NYT was interested in new audience data as much as anything The Athletic offers.

On an Athletic podcast a couple weeks ago Hailey Salvian strongly alluded to them pulling a story about the Senators org & Eugene when she was covering the team that was similar to the one that Mendes/Strang did that came out after Melnyk died.

Instead they moved her to Calgary to cover the Flames lol

I just commented on this in the gameday thread for the Canadian broadcast of the Calgary game... they got the panel people encouraging people to bet on Calgary to win because the line has come down after Dallas took the 1-0 lead and there's good value to be had betting on the Flames

Every ad break has either Aaron Paul or Wayne Gretzky or some lady who looks like Rhea Perlman telling me to bet. The boards have ads for betting services, and Sportsnet puts a DraftKings bug on the ice just beside the blue line. This poo poo wouldn't be there if there wasn't an obscene amount of money to be made, by the betting companies, and not by your average bettor.

I don't mind that it's legal, but someone is getting absolutely soaked out there.

They saw how much money there is to be made by emulating the English strategy of milking the poor and/or stupid out of their money by promising quick bets with instant returns. Advertising dollars are down so now you have to leech them directly from your audience.

Is there a reason anyone gives a poo poo aside from optics? I guess players get a bit less money but it's not like the coyotes playing in a weird arena will change anything for the other teams in the league. The league isn't going to suddenly implode cause the rink has too few seats.

The NHLPA should care, but I don't know if they do. Having proper facilities for training and medical staff is fairly important for professional sports, and there's no chance that ASU built those into the facility in the way they would need. Not to mention the locker rooms and broadcast facilities won't be of a high standard. The league won't implode, but a professional sports league does need to maintain standards, and this isn't going to meet them. Hell, the whole situation between the rink they're leaving and wherever they end up next is a cluster of poor management and reflects poorly on the league too.
