Hmm, what have we here?
I think the Miyoo and Deck or Odin are a perfect combo. Super tiny retro games and big beefy modern games.

Keep in mind the output is not as nice as the other, more expensive, sodering required GBA consolizer, it's a very soft and smeary output that either stretches the image to 16:9 or squishes it to 4:3, no native aspect ratio or pixel perfect mode available

Right, I considered that. I’m just thinking along the lines that it appears to be a fair solution that is also reversible.
I have a gameboy player for my GameCube but I’m not sure the aspect ratio being slightly off and less sharp picture is a big enough downside. Maybe I really need to see both side by side big enough to really tell.

If you can take the softer picture, wrong aspect ratios, and increased lag over the original gba consolizer it does sound like a good deal, at least it's much cheaper than the original. I wouldn't mind the softer picture so much but the wrong aspect ratio only would drive me nuts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3-hFSaVRWs

Also how the hell did they introduce extra lag? It's not emulation, it's using GBA hardware!

Wicked asks some other channels what their favorite retro game boxes are

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQrMrW8qE6M

Everyone picks a small x86 PC, RetroGameCorps specifically picks an oversized "hdmi stick" PC because it's easy to use with a projector, I thought projectors had huge lag but maybe he found one that doesn't? ETA Prime predictably picks one of those SFF Lenovo office PCs that he's always installing Batocera on. Wicked is the only one who picks an ARM Android box (the Super Console X Max Plus with a giant fan you see in the thumbnail).

I think it's more accurately a situation of some tvs having different stretch / fill ratios.
Why doesn't the tv industry have a custom feature which allows you to set specific ratios that are odd manually?
I know it's somewhat niche but good lord you would become the favorite of gamer nerds.

ANY OF YALLS DICKS HARD??
If anybody grabbed that cheap Miyoo Mini that was posted a few days ago, I think it's likely a scam so try to remember to open a dispute with AliExpress whenever the cut off date is so you can get your refund!

I got a DHL tracking number but it's likely fake. If it ever changes I'll update the thread but I have pretty low hopes here because the store had like 0 reviews and right now most of the reviews are pretty much negative. I totally forgot to check store reviews and stuff before buying so that's definitely my bad haha.

I don't know why you think a projector would have more lag than a flatscreen, the light just goes through a transparent lcd panel and gets focused by a lens on the other side

ANIME SUCKS HARD
:dukedog:
Got my Playdate on Friday, been having an okay time with it. New games drop on Mondays so I now have four and there seems to be a pattern each week of one conventional game and one toy-like arcadey experiment. The crank is a delight, very solid and has some resistance to it but no ratcheting or detents. The screen is gorgeous and does an amazing job of catching any amount of light if you tilt it towards the source. Most of the non-seasonal games I've come across seem to be text heavy though when what I'd love to see is unique uses for the crank in action games.

Projectors are (were?) notorious for additional processing delay to the point you'd have to adjust the sync timing for the audio on your home theatre setup to avoid everything feeling like a bad redub. Depending on the tech inside they can also be awful for fast moving games with a rainbowing artifact similar to chromatic aberration around high contrast edges.

Word on the street is that they're pretty much all caught up on shipping now and will be stocking them on Amazon in the near future at a higher cost, but probably it'll be roughly the same as cost + shipping from China. Hoping that's soon, I'm thinking about picking one up as a birthday gift for someone.

Also I got Half-Life 2 running on mine. It's surprisingly playable, apart from the whole right stick is a slider pad instead of a proper joystick problem.

https://www.reddit.com/r/HalfLife/comments/jioyg1/half_life_2_can_now_be_played_on_android_thanks/ has the breakdown, but here's the important bits:

https://gamebanana.com/maps/165807 You're going to want these, replace them in the maps folder for HL2 to fix a bunch of maps that have screwed up lighting or missing textures in lower quality settings.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UMOzEuFa-H8oFanoeGW69zSZ-V_LmEX7/view source engine apk to sideload on to the device

The actual .obb files from nvidia for the shield ports of HL2 and friends. These were available publicly and without cost on nvidia's website until nov of last year, so I don't think it's filez or anything, but apologies if I'm wrong, let me know and I'll edit it out.

HALF-LIFE 2 WAYBACK MACHINE: Index of /32940/tegrazone/payload/valve/halflife2 (archive.org)
HALF LIFE 2 EP 1 WM: https://web.archive.org/web/20201102145435/http://http.download.nvidia.com/tegrazone/payload/valve/halflife2ep1/
HALF LIFE 2 EP 2 WM: https://web.archive.org/web/20201102145435/http://http.download.nvidia.com/tegrazone/payload/valve/halflife2ep2/
PORTAL 1 WM: Index of /32940/tegrazone/payload/valve/portal (archive.org)

You'll specifically want these files:

Half-Life 2 - TOTAL: 2.21 GB
patch.22.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2.obb - 510.5 MB
main*.22.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2.obb* - 1.7 GB
Half-Life 2:Episode One - TOTAL: 2.8 GB
main.37.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2ep1.obb - 1.7 GB
patch*.37.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2ep1.obb* - 1.1 GB
Half-Life 2:Episode Two - TOTAL: 4.6 GB
main.32.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2ep2.obb - 1.7 GB
patch.32.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.halflife2ep2.obb - 2.9 GB
Portal - TOTAL: 2.45 GB
main.22.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.portal.obb - 1.7 GB
patch*.22.com.nvidia.valvesoftware.portal.obb* - 755.0 MB

Change the file extensions from .obb to .zip, unzip them and add the contents to a folder in the root of internal storage on the RP2+ (or whatever android device you're using) named SrcEng (you can create multiple folders inside srceng if you want multiple games running at the same time and just change the path in the Source Engine app when you launch it). Then fire up the Source Engine app and enjoy - it should have default mapping for controler already. I think the only thing I had to screw around with was mapping flashlight to Select.

It's a little dark and I haven't quite figured out how to adjust the gamma, but it's quite playable.

I got my RP2+ upgrade PCB in the mail yesterday, decided to install it tonight. It was going fine until I disconnected the joystick ribbon, I guess I used too much force and the ribbon partially severed. I checked the website and didn’t see any replacement parts for order. Am I going to have to wait 3 months to get one shipped from goretroid or are there any on say, Amazon that would do the trick? I saw replacement joysticks for the switch that looked very similar but I have no idea if they would work.

Retro Game Corps takes a look at using Windows 11 on the Odin as a less capable Aya Neo/Steam Deck

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cppIppR7WnI

Performance is actually really surprising for the Win 11 x86 to ARM translation layer, it appears to plow right through older games and 2D games with ease (and some stutter as you would expect from a realtime instruction set translation layer), but x64 is a no-go, even if they're indie games with n64 graphics. If people continue to run tests it will be interesting to see what the compatibility is like with Windows ARM running x86 code versus the Steamdeck running x86 and x64 code natively through the Proton API translation layer.
