The Beach Boys' artier stuff was constantly that line: You Still Believe In Me, She Knows Me Too Well, Leaving This Town and Don't Worry Baby are among better examples.

Maybe something like Yes' Turn of the Century.

Spotify suggested Sidney Gish in Beach Bunny's "similar artists" tab, I've always liked this track:

Best Coast also gives me similar vibes:

There's also Juliana Hatfield if you want more of that Lisa Loeb-y influence:

On a way less esoteric note I am also after some goofy-rear end summer music, in the vein of Washed Out's Paracosm or George Clanton & Nick Hexum.

Looking for metal with female vocals. It can be either clean singing or the screamier/growlier stuff.

I just listened to Vile Luxury and *loved* the Yoshiko Ohara parts, for context.

In addition to what ultrafilter said above:

Unleash the Archers: Melodic, super powerful soaring vox.

Aephanemer: Also melodic, vocalist has a pretty cool kinda mountain lion snarl.

Crypta: Pretty chunky straightforward death metal, vocals to match.

Vermilia: One woman pagan/atmoblack project, she does both a black metal rasp and this really pleasant folky singing voice.

Seven Spires: Melodic stuff ranging from power metal to Dimmu Borgir-esque bombast. Super versatile singer, does both very convincing growls and beautiful, delicate clean vox, and a bunch in between to boot.

I've recently come to discover a genre I have, for a lack of a better term, labeled Drowning Music. Songs with extremely heavy, oppressive, somber instrumentation, contrasted with bright, emotional lyrics. To give some examples, Heavy in Your Arms (Florence + the Machine), Salt (Eivør) and Muddy Waters (LP).

What I'm looking for is music in this style, particularly the intense instrumentation, like if there's an actual genre with a common name, or just more songs in that style. Drowning does not have to be a part of it, it's just the one thematic link I've been able to identify.

please do not link the sonic theme

Yeah, ERR’s solo stuff fits that for sure.

A lot of Neko Case as well.

Wovenhand is super heavy and the lyrics are all pretty deeply Christian though nothing even approaching praise and worship or contemporary Christian or anything else you’d associate with Christian music.

Younger Brother is an entirely different kind of thing, but the vocals are pretty soulful and melodic while the music is fairly intense, given both of the primary musicians are psychedelic electronic guys. It’s not heavy, just dense, there’s a lot going on.
