Big money backers will buy them in large numbers at wholesale and distribute them at events and such. It’s a way of funneling dark money into a figure you want to prop up. If they’re trying to make money the game (as mentioned above) is to get somebody else to make a huge bulk purchase of your book. But apparently she couldn’t wrangle that lol. Probably had a decent advance payment from the publisher so while it’s embarrassing for her she’s not really out any money

For example I'm subscribed to Volts which is a guy talking to people about various initiatives in the clean energy space. It's...fine. Kind of dry but it goes over some neat topics.
