The NHLPA should care, but I don't know if they do. Having proper facilities for training and medical staff is fairly important for professional sports, and there's no chance that ASU built those into the facility in the way they would need. Not to mention the locker rooms and broadcast facilities won't be of a high standard. The league won't implode, but a professional sports league does need to maintain standards, and this isn't going to meet them. Hell, the whole situation between the rink they're leaving and wherever they end up next is a cluster of poor management and reflects poorly on the league too.
The deal is that the Coyotes are building the locker rooms, medical areas, etc. in an annex that is going to be attached to the arena. The arena will be ready for hockey by October but the annex won't be ready until December, so there's gonna have to be some temporary stuff for the first few months

Yeah for a league that desperately wants to be taken seriously as a big 4 sport having one of your teams playing in a college arena is also not a great look

It would entirely depend on the college rink too! If Minnesota needed to redo the Xcel they could play at Mariucci for a year or two. But it holds around 11k people and it wouldn’t be because they’d fallen out and neglected to pay their rent. The Islanders just went through something like this too and managed it really pretty well. Not perfectly, but not a disaster either.

The whole situation is embarrassing and it would have been less disruptive to move it to a different state with new owners that aren’t incompetent.

Oh for sure. I'm sure they're not NHL standards, but ASU also isn't like, some rinky-dink community college. It's a nice stadium with good facilities.

They could get Luke but not Quinn? Or maybe he didn't want to be on a team with Gaudette.

I think there's also a potential knock down effect if hockey related revenues for the Coyotes drop.. The idea as I understand it is that they project their revenues will drop but the money they are saving in expenses will compensate them for the lost revenue and they can pay most their operating expenses with their TV deal and shared out league revenues anyway. Well.. if the revenues drop, the players collectively lose out on a percentage of whatever is lost because of the way the cap works.

Again who does this actually matter for though?

1. Ghost plays for the Coyotes, and I feel bad for the poor bastard.

2. It’s been reported that management’s strategy to not lose money is basically that they’ll lose some money on ticket revenue, which is mitigated because that’s profit sharing with the players. They’ll make it up via new gambling revenues (the owner of the Coyotes owns multiple casinos), which has 0 profit sharing with the players. Pretty hosed up to make the players eat the revenue loss.

3. The NHL has proven to be an incompetently run organization that is always behind the other 3 major sports (a low bar there too). So this is another point against them.

4. It is both embarrassing, sad for the players, and really , really funny all at the same time.

Yeah, there’s lots of reasons the players and the league should care, but for me as a fan, the only things I care about are:

1) there’s players I like and it sucks that they have to play in that bullshit
2) I’m guessing a rushed arena where a cheapass organization that got kicked out of their arena for not paying is responsible for upgrades is not going to pay for the best stuff. I’m a little worried that they’re going to get community arena level ice and someone’s knees and ankles are going to get blown up
3) the cameras have a decent sight line so the games against teams I do care about look ok

It's heartwarming to see the NHL being willing to do anything to keep the Coyotes playing in Phoenix, including having them not play in Phoenix at all.

They should become a real Arizona team and play 10 games each in Phoenix, Tempe, Tucson and Flagstaff.

I have a hard time seeing where Trotz is likely to land. Trotz to the Knights should be a loving slam dunk but they're probably too dumb to make it happen. Likewise the Flyers. Yzerman will probably call him but not sure if he wants to take on a rebuilding team at his age or follow Stevie's marching orders. The Devils would be a real interesting fit if they fired Ruff but they didn't and they're stupid so that won't happen. The Maple Leafs should give him a blank loving check but I can't see Shanahan/Dubas doing that, plus he may already have taken another job in the week it will take them to get eliminated and fire Keefe.

Islanders will probably hire Quenneville if the Knights don't.
