That was exactly my first experience too. Then I tried again a year or two later and noticed the "Run!!" message on the floor and realized you're supposed to run past him. That first encounter is supposed to teach you "if the obstacle seems insurmountable, running away is always an option" Unfortunately the tutorial doesn't account for externalities like a "game hard" meme giving a player wrong expectations
