I mean pop culture takes that are a little bit too spicy can send it down a rabbit hole but that might not be a "derail" as such

If pitbulls are disproportionately owned by black people that just means the pitbull defenders who blame the owners are racist as gently caress. Personally I think the breed of dogs specifically bred to be evil are bad no matter who owns them and putting the onus of their bad behavior on their owners is victim blaming (since the stupid beasts often attack their own owners for no reason).

I love pits and have had three good ones but they account for over 50% of fatal dog attacks (only purebred pitbulls, not mixed - if you include pit mixes it’s 70%) on humans and >90% of fatal dog v dog/dog v cat attacks. it’s an issue

Technically an independent production

https://variety.com/2021/film/global/stuart-ford-agc-studios-cannes-film-market-1235016510/

quote:

The return to business at the Cannes Film Market hasn’t necessarily marked the return to business as usual, as sluggish foot traffic and empty stalls in the Palais des Festival can attest. But AGC Studios CEO Stuart Ford says the past year has hardly dimmed his confidence in the indie film business.

“The independent financing and sales marketplace is still an incredibly fertile ground to finance content at a significant level,” he said. “It’s a very attractive business model, and it’s a very efficient business model.”

Ford appeared Saturday at the Cannes Film Market as part of an international film finance forum hosted by Winston Baker to discuss how the worlds of film finance and distribution will emerge from the uncertainty of the pandemic year.

“It has been a tremendously difficult period for international distributors internationally,” said Ford. “It’s been a period where changes that were already very much afoot in the international industry have been accelerated and may well lead to a new normal as we come out of the pandemic, back to whatever the new normal actually looks like.”

Nowhere has that flux been more evident than in the streaming industry, whose explosive growth in the past year was largely fuelled by cinema closures and the need of restless homebound audiences to find fresh forms of entertainment.

Coming out of the pandemic, the theatrical business model—already under threat pre-pandemic—looks even more uncertain, leaving indie distributors to grapple with how to build a profitable business model around a film’s release.
...
Two years ago, AGC Studios launched Roland Emmerich’s $140 million sci-fi blockbuster “Moonfall” on the Croisette, which the company subsequently financed “almost entirely out of the independent space,” said Ford.

“In the space of 10 days we came to Cannes, and we absolutely built the entire financial and distribution foundation for that commercial venture in 10 days, start to finish, $140 million, and that’s distributed worldwide,” said Ford. “That’s incredibly efficient.”

I guess hope that Chinese capital thinks a Western film is a good bet

I don't think the absurdity of this clip is as weird as the fact that Netflix has a show starring Mike Myers, with a Shrek cameo, and I guess they never advertised it? I never heard of this.

This is actually an interesting conversation starter with a couple of facets. First of all, you're not wrong. Most DJs do mix existing music. However, the art of djing (we're talking with proper beat and key matching and transitions that make sense) takes a lot of time to learn. i'm, oh, roughly 25 years in, and still learning every time i do a set. Second - not everybody plays strictly pre-released music. Not in this mix, but i've often done sets that were partially or even mostly my original productions.

anyways i thought this thread would be particularly interested in my latest one, as i did a citypop set! if you're not familiar with it, tokyo city pop was a light, melodic but head nodding genre that became very popular in Japan in the 80s. It was a time of luxury, of pleasure, of economic success. It died out to nearly nothing during the 90s Japanese economic crash, as people didn't want to dance and sip martinis while the yen was being turned into toilet paper. However, it's gotten a bit of a resurgence lately and there's a little following. You can kind of think of it as their version of yacht rack, but a little boppier.

http://ultrawizardsword.net/s/bluest-screen-of-death/

The first two hours and change are city pop, and then i decided to say gently caress it and i finished up with 45 mins or so of super cheesy synthwave remixes.

e: this mix was literally the hardest live mix i've ever done in my life, because as it turns out - none of this was recorded to click tracks or metronomes. The tempos wander heavily as they push and pull through the tracks. It kept me on my toes the whole time!
