I am also sad they took it away from bretonnia because what lord would raid his own province. Every lord, that is who. Those are not bretonnians they are raiding. They are peasants.

That makes no sense. You then need to pay for the repairs to the infrastructure, farms, vineyards, etc-which you initially built in the first place. You're surely losing more money on the repairs than on the raiding.

A large part of my enjoyment is based on whether I mesh with a faction in general or not. It's why I haven't gone past 50 turns with either Empire or Dark Elves after multiple attempts. It's looking as if Kislev and Cathay probably are the same for me largely. I was honestly worried about enjoying the daemon factions before release as I've never been a chaos guy, but now suddenly I'm a chaos guy. The roster poo poo doesn't bother me beyond limited hero variety but it doesn't really bother me at all because my favorite faction so far has been Drycha. And I don't even recruit elves really. As long as I'm enjoying the battles is the important part. The only reason I can't get into Tzeentch or Slaanesh is because the battles are too god drat busy. Just frantically maneuvering chariots or flying chariots it can be exhausting. I enjoy a little simplicity to my battles and the talk of smaller army sizes both entices and repels me equally (if only because when building my armies sometimes 20 seems too small to fit everything I want!) I like Ogres, but I see them much improved on IE and with blood. Khorne too. Watching the fights just feels off somehow with them. Honestly Slaanesh and Tzeentch will become far more interesting on a big map as well. I think the rosters aren't a problem really in game 3. People probably just can't get into them and some of the factions are rather hard to learn how to use.

Tzeentch's flying chariot is a gimmick unit that you don't really need to use at all, honestly. Its entire purpose is having a lord-killing laser gun and it kind of sucks rear end as an actual chariot. You can gunline it up with Tzeentch and focus 100% of your micro on flying around blowing up armies with your lords and it's honestly massively more effective than if you put that same level of micro into his mobility pieces. Slaanesh is absolutely Crazy Micro: The Faction.

The game with mods is pretty fun. I understand the frustrations but Total War series in general has always been plagued with the biggest manchilds and crybabies in the planet, and this goes back to the days of Rome 1. The game that was advertised was the game that we go. My only disappointment is the lack of blood and syn kills.

The chaos forces feel like they would amazing(ly horrible) to have on a full map. The implications are delicious and I'm super excited for that. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy them on the current map. While their rosters feel little small their campaign mechanics are way more interesting than launch WH2 factions.

I wish there was more greenskin incursion events like the beginning of the Bretonnian campaign so that playing defensively wasn’t boring as gently caress. No, not playing defensively like “they’ll probably sack your minor settlements the second you in garrison them”. Defensively like “an army will appear on your province capital doorstep in 5 turns get ready”.

Dynamic scripted events would be fun like that growth loss event where you get the skaven symbol scrolled on a door/wall would lead to a skave incursion. Under cities and the hidden stuff should also have events rather than just build a building and pay money for it to go away. I really enjoyed the empire events where you'd spawn armies to do fights though i'd like the option to control which army gets the fights if i was power leveling one. I'd love an event where a chaff army would spawn with advanced warning like beastmen hordes in the drakk or gobbos spilling out of a cave in the mountains.

They (modders too) can do a lot with those dilemmas or whatever but they rarely, if ever, lead to fights.

I kinda liked the original skaven food balance - it led to an appropriately aggressive campaign strategy, constantly raiding and expanding to feed an ever-growing rat population. undercities are amazing but they make it too easy to balance your food budget. you lose that characterful expand-or-die edge similarly I don't get the complaints about the chaos god rosters. they're monomaniacal expressions of specific emotions and concepts, of course they're gimmicky, overspecialised and limited in scope. balance is for boring, well-adjusted people who probably have jobs and go to therapy

If I remember right unless the cities had a food resource in them it was a food deficit to own the city, so you could easily end up in a situation where expanding was actively harmful and it was optimal to build tall and small as the skaven, because every lovely town you took was costing you food and the special food generating buildings were few and far between. And once you bottomed out and had no more food it felt really, really bad to play skaven in battles because your entire army would route on contact with the -20 global leadership debuff.

the idea was probably supposed to be "use provinces to get income, use income to support army, use army to get food by raiding and sacking, use food to support provinces", with expanding being more about eliminating rivals. though there were a lot of four-settlement provinces on the vortex map which obviously skewed the maths

The skaven had a set route to expand for mr plague man and mr red man. Like you just kept moving towards food. The problems came if you expanded too far in a bad direction or too far in two good directions.

In 3 I'd occasionally see fairly even settlement fights but those aren't proper sieges. Why can't, like, a dwarf quest battle be that the orcs are storming the walls?

They have relatively low range and the move speed penalty isn't going to do as much since you can't hit a critical mass of ranged firepower. I think you'd want things that help force the enemy to engage or snipe specials. Mortars, jezails, maybe even lightning cannons.

I played with GCM maps though so i was actually playing on smartly designed layouts. A good way to bait those doom stacks into attacking and not running away is having a friendly army sit in ambush behind the settlement. If the AI doesn't see them they'll try to attack the settlement and you'll have the friendly army as reinforcements. There's nothing better than having your main LL army take part in a defensive siege with some juiced up heroes destroying everything.

Eh GCM maps don't change every maps you still fight vanilla sieges but the ones i remember the most were a few GCM map defenses. I've done a few doom stack siege defenses with vanilla stuff though but it was down to the wire and i mostly won due to army losses.

They probably deliberately program the A.I to not do too many siege battles because holy hell is the A.I completely clueless in sieges, especially as the attacker. I've seen entire armies just stand outside my gates not doing anything because I destroyed their siege towers and now the A.I has no idea what to do. They'll either mindlessly rush your walls or their brain will break
|
# ? May 9, 2022 07:35 |

I've won a lot of siege defences I had no right to on tw3 but only through exploitation of towers and the AI falling apart on attack. Siege battles just suck in general with the engine they use and I don't think there's a lot they can do to solve it without drastic changes. Even just trying to form up a defence in a city is aggravating as your troops get stuck on the edges of buildings and walls that have invisible boundaries way larger than you expect.

I fought a few defensive sieges every campaign with most factions and leaving the orcs alive to the south means you get a fort defense every 5 turns or so.

I get siege defences all the time, I just don't bother letting it get to that anymore though because its far more profitable to just krump the army before they actually hit the "assault the walls" button. I also play vanilla.

I had a shitload of siege defenses in my Tzeentch campaign because I was too strapped for cash to have enough armies to defend all my fronts, especially when Kairos was away in the Chaos Realms. Between Khorne portal invasions in the east, Kislev coming in from the west and Ogres coming in from the south, and really only having one other army until very late in the campaign, and having such lovely replenishment that I couldn't take many field battles, I ended up relying on garrisons for a lot. Really showed me just how good Blue Horrors can be if you micro them right, and just how incredibly awful they are if you gently caress up even a little bit.

My first completed Vortex campaign more or less ended with a huge siege before the final battle, playing Kroq'Gar with a chokepoint at the city of gold. Part of that was probably because it was my first game and I didn't quite get stuff like setting up ambushes or wiping out enemy skaven instead of letting them declare peace to just later break the peace. I had three stacks of campaign-spawned Skaven armies go after my city with a middling mixed army defending it, and it really felt like my dinos were holding off an endless wave of rat ninjas. Haven't really experienced anything to that level since, because good tactics for me now usually involves using ambush or lightning strike to pick off those armies one by one, and the computer won't normally do even battles in more open parts of the game map.
