that quote is the least embarrassing thing zorak ever said. it's just him saying he had an emotional response to an anime. it's not him trying to claim a mediocre idol anime directed by a guy who shames idols for getting online harassment is a thoughtful exploration of the problems with idol culture or w/e

erased is just funny to me for how mad people have gotten, that the mc did not get to have the girl who was a victim of horrific abuse as his wife

Ah, Wake Up Girls. Was that before or after Yamakan did Fractale, an anime that bombed so hard, it temporarily became a measurement of how bad a series sold?

no i'm pretty sure he actually was. gurren lagann was still airing at the time of that post, nearing the end of its run. ended on september 30th so that would've been the second to last episode

When asked about it he said the post was about TTGL, but that does not make sense with how the post is written.

However, like Colonel said it isn't really that bad, although it is pretty overdramatic lol.

Is Gurenn Lagenn just famous for being almost a laser guided meme generator? I've never seen anyone talk about that show for anything like art, story, animation, music, etc. but for all the super insane one-liners and weird power escalation.

Any show that generated memes people still remember 15 years later was probably noteworthy in some aspect, even if those aspects have been forgotten over time. No one bothers to meme on poo poo that no one watched because it sucks.

Here's a quote of his from before the last 2 eps of GL aired:

quote:

Part of Gurren Lagann's appeal is that it perfects everything that was good about previous decades of mecha shows. It's the past decades drawn together into something that's them yet new. It's ideally hotblooded, it's inspiring. By god does it inspire emotions in people. Just reading the megathread, you read so many posts about people pumping their fists, yelling audibly while watching, and all that, when watching a raw of an episode in a language they cannot speak.

It's not an overly complex show, yet it is so capable of being totally unpredictable at the same time. It is incredibly creative, and incredibly perfect. Like if someone said "what if we were to make the most badass thing ever? No restrictions, none whatsoever. We got the budget, we got the ability. Why hold back? Why let physics of the universe restrain, why settle for reason!? It's impossible!? So what! Kick that to curb, we're making awesome".

It's a show built entirely around a simple concept: that with willpower, anything is possible. Other super robot shows (G Gundam, Gunbuster, GaoGaiGar etc etc) have this, true, but it's shown so flowingly. The challenges grow so much, the scale grows so much. In the beginning, Simon and Kamina were fighting small mecha. Now, Simon is fighting massive nightmarish amalgems larger than planets that are capable of bending space. The Lagann is one of the smallest super robots ever, powered by the smallest power source ever, a small drill, and a man's burning heart. That power, that mecha, are the basis and core of a massive super robot larger than any other. It's the impossible made possible, it's will power against despair. They don't hide the theme, they say it in the background all the time. Do the the impossible, see the invisible. Whoah whoah fight the power. Touch the untouchable, break the unbreakable, whoah whoah fight the power.

It's not a new message at all. It's a primal message of humanity. Humanity as a race is this being portrayed in Gurren Lagann; with will power we can do anything. We HAVE done the "impossible". Humanity has flown. Humanity has split the atom. Humanity has left our planet, and landed on our moon! Our hand stretches ever further into the heavens, our knowledge extending outwards. It's a human concept, an inspiring hope for the future that humanity can do anything.

It speaks alot of personal depth to me, personally. I'm an undergraduate going for a major in Astronomy/ Astrophysics; my interest is more specifically is in Space Colonization. The fundamental basic technology has existed for orbital space colonization for awhile now (the late 70s). With time the basics have merely grown. O'Neill Cylinders are possible now, they are within our hand's reach. Humanity is capable of accomplishing so much just with the pure will to do it. All that is necessary for such a future to happen is the will and urge for it to come, and for human action to show that will. Without this fundamental driving force of indominatable will towards the obstacles ahead of us, humanity has no future.

Gurren-Lagann is easily my favorite anime of any kind ever at this point.

I remember at one point some people got it in their head that Nanoha was like some definitive response to the classic magical girl anime and was super deep and thought provoking until it got pointed out that it was created from a series of porn games and targeted to the same audience buying those games at the time.

What it became later was a different story, but the original series definitely wasn't the Madoka of it's day.
