I've been making it a thing over the last couple years to watch through classic anime I know I'd like that I missed through having poor access to it over my life--and given my tastes, it's been mostly sci-fi and mecha anime. There's a lot that actually ages extremely well (Evangelion honestly hasn't aged a day), while some are very clearly of their time even if they're still very good (basically every Gundam series).

...but hooooooo boy Gurren Lagann, especially regarding women. The female character designs are something I could forgive as just an element of the medium (Yoko, the flame-bikini girl, is honestly the only really bad one, but she does cast a long shadow), but I can only do that if it's the only sexist element of the show, and it's really not. The worst of it--and definitely the part that stuck out as 'they surely wouldn't do this today' is that Kamina is pretty constantly sexist, and the show never really treats this as a negative part of his character. ...honestly the show doesn't really depict any part of Kamina as being bad, despite him being an abusive idiot, but the sexism made me genuinely uncomfortable with how much it was just allowed to keep happening.

Thanks for this. This is how I've felt about it from the start and it makes me feel like I'm going crazy because no one else seems to acknowledge it, even from otherwise progressive feminist anime fans. It's been a long time but I remember a whoooole lot of really gross subtext wrapped up in the show.

Not even sure about "they wouldn't do this today". A while back I tried out "The Seven Deadly Sins" as Netflix kept pushing it at me and it seemed to have pretty decent ratings. Turns out one running gag in there is that the protagonist guy keeps constantly peeping on, groping, and otherwise sexually harassing one particular female character, with the joke being that she's largely too oblivious to really notice. And that poo poo was made in like 2014.

Jojo was another one I hit, and largely falls in that category of 'dated but understandably so'. The first two parts were written in the 80s (when Shonen Jump had some pretty stupid outlooks about female characters) and set in Victorian England and the 1930s respectively. They aren't fantastic at women, and yeah, tried a 'cool Nazi' character they REALLY shouldn't have, although the anime cleans most of it up into clear 'understandable character flaw for the era' territory, and gives a lot more respect to the most prominent woman in part 2 in the process.

The show definitely gets way better about women from part 4 onward--you can tell the heart's in the right place in part 3, but Araki sorta painted himself into a corner by writing a story with little to no room for regular female characters. There definitely is a pretty lovely crowd that completely ignores that and just sees it all as Many Men Being Men from those first parts, but I've never actually crossed paths with them and the actual series never really stands with them.

I'm way more sour on Gurenn Lagann because it was made in 2007, there were no excuses.

THat's part of why I can get past the dumber jokes in Naruto like the Harem Jutsu that really shouldn't work that well given the other characters know that she's a kid doing that move and so severely underage and still find it weirdly hot even when it's Konohamaru trying it on. At least the fights are still solid, the characters are strong (now that sakura is going into medicine she at least has something to do, and Hinata was always great because of her aspiring to be more like Naruto despite her crippling self esteem issues) and the fact that there are only 2 main villains (by which I mean villains that are bad on their own, so Orochimaru and Itachi) means that it avoids DBZ escalation problems. Also some of the dumber jokes still work for me, like the fart joke at the end of the beetle episodes that served as a major Hinata arc was very well executed.

I feel like this happens with drat near any show that ever actually ends and resolves its relationship arcs. No wonder that one mangaka whose entire brand is basically 'assholes in relationship dodecahedrons' seems allergic to ever actually ending any stories. (Uresei Yatsura, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha...)

jojo starts off as a old school fighting manga where they used superpowers to fight vampires. each act follows a new generation of JoJo fighting evil.

in the third act that is completely discarded and never comes up again as everyone starts manifesting a tulpa with specific psychic/magic abilities. they’re named after the tarot cards, then egyptian gods, and finally just music bands and songs.

by the seventh act the universe has been reset and takes place during the same time period as act 1 but instead of victorian england it’s the wild west and they’re in a horse race. and jesus is involved somehow.

the eighth act takes place in the modern era again and the protagonist has four testicles. this is a important plot point.
