Thought I posted this an hour ago, but lovely signal at work guess stopped it:Freaquency posted:Wait what is the Albertsons/Publix thing South Florida used to basically have three main supermarket chains: Publix, Winn-Dixie, and Albertsons, roughly in that order of most locations to least. Publix is basically unassailable in a lot of areas, but the other chains had some locations that did very well or even better than the nearest Publix for one reason or another. Around 2009 or so, around the same time that Target and Walmart started getting heavily into groceries themselves, Albertsons basically pulled out of Florida. Those locations that hadn’t been doing well were closed (A few got turned into gyms, and you can still see the old facade out front), but the ones that had been successful were by bought by Publix, and initially told everyone it was a merger and “most” of their jobs would remain. Naturally, most people were skeptical of that, and assumed they’d end up re-interviewing or whatever. What happened is Publix fired all the managers/salary level people from Albertsons they’d taken over at basically the first moment they could. As I understand it, they basically got no notice and were told to leave, and the compensation was very minimal. The person I mentioned before who refuses to shop at Publix was a career retail manager, and honestly one of the best I ever worked for. He’d been with Albertsons for like a decade, been at that store for years, and it had been one of their best locations by every measure. I don’t remember all the exact details, but the way it he described how they fired them all was simply bad, and basically amounted to “You’re extremely qualified, but you worked for them, not us” and got replaced by someone from Publix who was being promoted up to run a store for the first time (That position would be open again within a year when they didn’t work). Most of the department heads and supervisors were retained, but now were demoted to be beneath someone who’d come from a nearby Publix. The new transfers in from former Publix locations were a very mixed bag, some being people looking for a chance at advancement, but also some that other managers were looking to offload. Basically, anyone they retained who was above a shelf stocker or cashier had no chance of advancing or doing anything else. I ended up working years later with five or six people who had coincidentally been on both sides of the merger, in some cases at the same location, and they all agreed that it just wasn’t handled all that well. These were people I ended up working with for 4-5 years and really respected, and their stories mostly lined up, so I took them at their words.

FizFashizzle posted:It’s not safe. Manchin is in a weird position where he will probably lose a general as a democrat and will certainly lose a primary as a Republican. 2024 general for him probably depends on opponent quality and whether his seat is a priority target for the Republicans to dump money into (which has more to do with the overall senate map and seat count than anything with Manchin himself). If it’s not a likely tipping point race and he’s up against a Republican who’s either too boring or too crazy or a documented pedophile, he’s probably going to be fine. He won in 2018 sandwiches between two elections where WV voted 65% for Trump, so you certainly can’t count him out.

@Braks: Do you have a website or email for your Disney planning services? My best friend is bringing his two daughters to Disneyworld and I think the only thing they have set in stone are hotels and park reservations. His wife may need some tips and Disneyhacks (must-see things, tips for timing/travelling around the park, etc) for their time at Disneyworld and I was going to point her in your direction if that is a service you offer.

Y'all remember The OC? In a delightful "where are they now?" story, the guy who played Ryan, the rough and tumble adoptee into the Cohen family has gone heavily into crypto. No, not that way, he has become an expert on it and is basically telling anyone who will listen how stupid and dumb it actually is and how all NFTs are scams. So that's pretty cool.

Manchin literally just released a commercial endorsing a Republican congressman who's getting primaried by a Trump-endorsed lunatic. He likes being the Senate's kingmaker and he's wildly popular in West Virginia because he's completely in the coal industry's back pocket and he's a Blue Dog Democrat. His seat is safe as long as he wants it. And he knows that right now he's the difference between Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell being the Senate Majority Leader, so his committee seats are safe, too.

The question was why don't the dems character-assasinate Manchin, my answer was because his seat isn't safe - meaning, if manchin was torpedoed and unelectable, a republican would win his seat. If manchin is not torpedoed, of course as an incumbent he has an advantage over a non-incumbent.

Yeah, the DNC basically holds its nose and sends funds his way every time he's up for election because he's a nominally blue Senator and helps them stay close to having a majority. And he'd have no qualms about switching parties if the DNC pissed him off too much. The thing is that Manchin is basically the only Democrat who could win a Senate seat in West Virginia. That state is redder than Hell itself and he keeps getting elected to statewide office because he throws just enough bones to the Democrats but then spends the rest of his time appealing to conservative voters.

yea im gonna suggest maybe not paying off the conman bc it'd be too hard to make people vote for you without him. that's a dogshit reason to continue to be held hostage by 1 dude. but of course they don't care about that. poo poo if anything the dems probably love having the easy cover for not getting anything done. more endless debates about how if you just vote harder next time the guy that the party willingly supports won't be able to knife the party's biggest priorities.

I mean, leading economic indicators like the Baltic Dry Index have been screaming that we're long overdue for a recession that's quite likely going to be worse than 2008 - 09. The supply chain getting turbofucked again, combined with inflation, combined with an almost-certain COVID surge this summer, is going to create a perfect storm and it's going to be terrible for everyone. I was thinking of moving back to Madison once I get my new job (I'm expecting an offer by the end of the week), but I'd rather hang onto my studio apartment in Iowa for another year just because the rent is so drat cheap and I'd like to rebuild my savings account and pay down some medical debt.
