crypto seems like the last space where financial ne'er-do-wells still might actually face some reckoning so im hoping some folks get soaked over this.

It's back in the top 10 coins by market cap now. They are just going to print trillions.

i don't understand why you would mint new coins in response to both the stablecoin and Luna going down in value. can someone explain it to me like I'm an idiot?

ryde posted:i don't understand why you would mint new coins in response to both the stablecoin and Luna going down in value. can someone explain it to me like I'm an idiot? -You can always redeem one Terra for $1 worth of Luna -You can always redeem whatever number of Luna tokens add up to $1 to get one Terra There should always be enough Luna tokens in circulation to redeem all the Terra tokens for $1 each. But now that Luna's value is near zero, you need nearly infinite tokens to cover the supply of Terra, and presumably there's no circuit breaker on their code. Oh and you can't get $1 for a Terra as of the last couple days, so there's probably some utterly busted preconditions there too lol

ryde posted:i don't understand why you would mint new coins in response to both the stablecoin and Luna going down in value. can someone explain it to me like I'm an idiot? The "algorithmic peg" that's the whole point of this dumb poo poo is basically a smart contract that let's you exchange 1 Terra for 1 USD of Luna, or vice versa. This keeps Terra "pegged" at 1 USD so long as Luna always has a big bid. Otherwise you go into a death spiral that basically prints infinity Luna, making it worthless, followed soon after by Terra. This is the phase we're in now.

ryde posted:i don't understand why you would mint new coins in response to both the stablecoin and Luna going down in value. can someone explain it to me like I'm an idiot? since you can only exchange terra for luna, and one of them (terra) is supposed to always be valued at $1, printing trillions of coins theoretically could raise the price of terra to be equal to $1, since it's well below that. of course, as is with crypto, that's dumb as hell and won't actually work

"Blizz Finance is a decentralized, non-custodial liquidity market protocol operating on Avalanche." https://twitter.com/BlizzFinance/status/1524912507789377549 isn't it great how often "decentralized" often actually means "centralized in some random third party we don't control"?

im imagining someone hardcoding that value and another person asking "what happens if it goes below $0.10" and getting the answer that it'd never happen because it means poo poo has hit the fan.
