wasn’t Ecuador the place where the leftist coalition lost by like 1.5%

I suppose if Mexico was somehow also not involved then Argentina or Chile would be the one trying to dominate from the Southern Cone

The left candidate Andres Arauz won the first round and was ahead in the polls pretty much the whole way through. Really thought he was gonna take it but he didn't. There was an indigenous leader, Yaku Perez, that finished a distant third in the first round, but he was actually a right liberal and frequently attacked Arauz in the lead up to the final round.

He ended up losing around 5%.

The indigenous population is pretty well spread out across the spectrum unlike a place like Bolivia. So you had members of that population in all 3 fractions. If you are familiar with US politics Perez was essentially the Elizabeth Warren type candidate in this situation.

Also as far as lithium access goes, it's probably a question of extractability, too. Bolivia has salt flats from ancient dried saltwater lakes. The brine underneath the salt layer is like 1% lithium by weight, literally all you have to do is pump it out.

This was already posted up-thread, and yes it's terribly ironic but also predictable for the head of a liberal democratic state to say such things.

Moïse was like the anti-Castro. An unpopular puppet of Western powers who still managed to get assassinated by a team of US funded psychos.

quote:

The six-person delegation that purportedly visited Corvington and claimed to be representatives of the U.S. government allegedly included James Solages, a former maintenance worker in Palm Beach County who left his job to work for Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU), a Miami-area security firm; and Joseph Vincent. Also a Haitian American, Vincent was once a DEA informant with a reputation for impersonating U.S. federal agents in Haiti.

For 200 years Colombia has been ruled by only 40 families, or so says this article from BBC Mundo.

These families also mainly hail from the Andean region/Bogotá where coffee is produced, with 80 of the last 118 presidents being from the Andes. A study by the economist Adolfo Meisel found that 65% of government functionaries were from the Andes and 42% from the same university, the University of the Andes located in Bogotá. The same effect can be seen in the ranks of the media and business.

These families made up the ranks of the Conservative and Liberal parties which made an agreement in 1958 to switch power every 4 years and exclude the left, those outside the elite, which helped lead to the rise of guerrillas and civil war.

Look at ex-presidents and you'll see a pattern of "this president was this other president's great nephew, or inherited a major newspaper".

Petro stands as a total outsider to this elite, and if elected would represent the first real retaking of power by the Colombian people from this elite essentially in the country's whole loving history.

Truthfully, I don't know anything about Venezuela. But I do know that if "tankies" exist it's because the alternative is a boring charade defined by negativity toward everything that isn't itself, and we're not going away, because you made us what we are!
