I wish I could have snagged video of it, but I saw two crane flies having sex and it was as awkward and frantic looking as you'd expect.

McGavin posted:Good news! The common newt, Lissotriton vulgaris, was introduced to Australia near Melbourne in 2011, so in a few years you'll probably be overrun with them. Ahh. I assume it will turn out to be extravagantly toxic to all native animals or cause koalas to spontaneously combust, or something. How do newts escape exactly!?

I don't have any photos because it was very far away and all's I got is a phone, but last week a Marsh sandpiper showed up in Ontario for the first time ever recorded and Mom and I went to see it.

Hi. I need help IDing a little friend my husband found this morning on the way to work: About 8 cm tall, spotted in Meriden, CT.

Cute borb! Looks like a wood thrush to me https://identify.whatbird.com/obj/683/overview/Wood_Thrush.aspx

Oh! What a cutie. Thank you for the ID. I have never seen one of those before, and we have a wide variety of backyard birds! I will keep an eye out for them in the future.

Probably hit a window One of the prettiest songs in North America so maybe you can find some woodland nearby to listen to them. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Wood_Thrush/sounds

There is woodland all around where I live. I think I have heard them before! Just never saw one. I'll have to keep a closer eye out. Also, husband says if the little guy did hit a window, he didn't seem injured. Just a bit dazed. He nudged it gently with his finger, and it woke up and flew into some bushes.

Someone wanted to join me in the shower this morning. I put them outside which seemed like a better outcome for both of us. Nice camouflage against the kitchen counter! I found a dead squirrel the other day and its upper jaw structure was interesting.

This feels like an omen. Also found a pretty rove beetle the other day, with his abdomen raised to intidimate (Staphylinus caesareus). And the recently introduced species of silverfish Ctenolepisma longicaudata, showed up in my kitchen.

I just found a sick(?) gray catbird on our lunch walk: He let me get right up close to him and even touch him, so something's not right with him. I think he might be overheated. It is very warm and humid today (central Connecticut). I picked him up gently and brought him to our porch where we have some house plants, for some shade. I got a dish of water, dipped my finger in it, and dribbled it over his beak. I saw him swallow it. Internet says they eat bugs and berries, so we got a bag of frozen blueberries out and left some for him. I'm not sure what else to do.

He probably just hit his head, and is concussed. If that's the case, he should recover in about a day. In addition to the water, you can try feeding him something like jam or jelly, which will give him an energy boost, since it has a lot of sugar in it.

If you have any fruit jam/preserves or some honey, you can also offer that for a big sugar energy kick. Adding honey to the water may also help, but don't go crazy, it should still be mostly water!

You could also look into local wildlife rescues if the condition doesn't improve. Quite a hare-y situation on my run this morning. I haven't seen a group that large before, and it looks like one of them is behind on seasonal fashion trends.

my cat is norris posted:looks very gartery to me but the spots are throwing me off Right! I can't find a single image of a garter with the spots. The ribbon snakes in this region look similar but no spots. This sucker was about 5 feet long too. (allegedly I didn't get to see it)

I always love finding this thread again and getting caught up! I'm envious of all the newts/salamanders everyone seems to find. It would be amazing to find one in the wild. Anyway, I finally have a contribution for this year's thread. We got a new house and started ripping up the awful St. Augustine in the front yard to plant a pollinator garden. Planted some dill in and got a couple black swallowtails! 21 days later... I planted a lot of larval host plants too, looking forward to sharing more fat caterpillar friends when they finally arrive.

Snake ID, it looks like a garter but I'm also getting Gulf Saltmarsh Watersnake (Nerodia clarkii clarkii) vibes, seems to be a fair bit of variation and sometimes spots on these snakes. e.g.

I did gain barn swallows though, which live at my apartment building and recently returned, they fly like bats and are not afraid of you so they will sail all around you like you're not even there. There is a starling that bothers them though, and I wish I could deter it in some fashion.

I know nutria are invasive but yesterday I saw 3 baby nutria at the same park I posted the goslings from a week or so ago and they were so painfully cute I couldn't hate them. They were way too little and at way too much distance to try getting pics or video with my phone, but they were adorable.
