I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

I love how the announcer is so tunnel visioned on the lead horses that he doesn't notice rich strike until the 11th hour

Well, no one was expecting it. Rich Strike was originally an alternate pick for the lineup and the longest of long odds at 80:1. And the fact all that ground was made up during the final furlong is nothing short of amazing. A lot of horses keep a little in the tank for a surge, but that much energy and that much acceleration during the tail-end of a race is incredible.

BREADS
Poor Sham is completely overshadowed by Secretariat.

If he is remembered today, it’s usually for keeping Secretariat company in the first part of the Belmont Stakes, only to finish dead last after an injury.

What I think is remarkable about Sham’s career is that he ran the Kentucky Derby in under two minutes. Put that performance in any year other than 1973, and he wins the race. He’s not just the second fastest horse of 1973. He’s the second fastest horse ever to run the Derby.

I've always heard stories about horse racing being terribly corrupt. Things like owners/jockies making fast horses run slower in prelim races to increase the betting odds for the big races.

I think there was a rumor of that but in the opposite direction: Final Strike was so hyped up they gave him tranquilizers that wore off just as the race was underway.

And of course a bunch of nutjobs decided to give it a couple of extra tries:
from the article:
"Eichenwald has said that dozens of copycats on Twitter sent flashing images to him in the aftermath of the incident, adding that he had passed them along to authorities.

Authorities found a number of direct messages to the account where the first tweet originated that made reference to Eichenwald, according to a criminal complaint against Rivello. Two such messages read: “I hope this sends him into a seizure” and “let’s see if he dies.""

So yeah, if any of those had managed to kill him? (which to be clear here, they absolutely could have if for instance he was sitting on the toilet while checking his phone and the seizure sent him smacking head first into the floor)
I sincerely believe that would be a murder charge right there (or an attempted murder if he only just barely managed to survive through an extended hospital trip)

The wikipedia article you linked says there were already suspicions before the race even started due to absurd betting patterns, and they got caught immediately after the race was finished?

Interesting to note is the involvement of the most famous horse/bookmaker family in Australia, the Waterhouses. Who are still, to this very day, complete and utter scum!

From some of the descriptions I've read, "loving hurts" kind of undersells the pain I think.

According to the Schmidt Pain Scale, it's one of the most painful Hymenoptera stings you can experience.

quote:

Pain Level 4 is the highest level in the Schmidt sting pain index. Schmidt's original index rated only one such example, the sting of the bullet ant, as a 4. Schmidt has described the sting as "pure, intense, brilliant pain...like walking over flaming charcoal with a three-inch nail embedded in your heel." The bullet ant's venom primarily contains poneratoxin, a paralyzing neurotoxic peptide.

That's the bullet ant. The pic is a bull-ant. Bull-Ant's look much fiercer, with their huge pincers, but any pain from their bite is purely from the physical aspects of a bite. The bullet-ant delivers it's pain from venom.

Nah, like most ants, bull ants have plenty of venom in their sting. The bite serves to get a grip in order to sting, even if it is an uncomfortable bite.
