I’ve mentioned it before in this thread but actual big financial accounting is anathema to the idea of an immutable ledger because there’s this thing called “reconciliation” that is literally fixing the inevitable quirks and post-deal changes that happen with any system that deals in money, time and people

there was never a risk of blockchain replacing anything important and only people who didn’t know how the world really works [or were conveniently ignoring it in pursuit of a big payday] ever thought it was a good idea

appends that cost money to process? no way. I mean it’s possible but nobody would do it voluntarily because the fees would need to be part of the recon itself and you don’t know what those are until you submit the update which creates a loop

everyone has been doing this in a sql database with journal entries and knowledge date accounting for 30 years, adding a blockchain to slow it down does nothing

yeah, "immutability" is not necessarily a problem for accounting applications. in fact, you want immutability (or extremely restricted mutability) for most general ledger systems in order to maintain an audit trail - if an accountant needs to correct something in a computerized ledger using double-entry bookkeeping, the answer is to post a correcting entry to cancel the error out rather than to delete the incorrect entry.

but that can all be accomplished using existing conventional databases, and its literally everything else about "blockchains" that makes them terrible for accounting applications. It's not just that existing alternatives (i.e., a conventional database) are far cheaper, more reliable, and more efficient, it's that the decentralized and public nature of a blockchain makes it a nonstarter for virtually every accounting application. Who on earth needs or wants their payroll transactions to be public?
