ThinkTank posted:

Except they did! The Caps won a cup. Hockey is one of the most luck based sports on earth. The 2nd all time leading point scorer won a pair of cups as a bit part on the early 90s pens as a teenager then spent the remaining 22 years of his career when he emerged as the best winger in history wining nothing and returning to the finals just once aged 41. The NHL's sixth highest scorer Marcel Dionne never won a cup, in fact he appeared in just 49 playoff games over 18 seasons and never made it past the 2nd round. Ray Bourque, probably the 3rd best defenceman in history, had to be traded to a super team aged 39 before he finally won a Stanley Cup. The best player in the league today in Connor McDavid (and arguably since Lemieux) hasn't won squat yet.

I get that Ovi hasn't won as many cups as his archival in Crosby, but not many guys in history have. Ovechkin and the Caps have done petty well all things considered and statistically should've won like maybe one more cup. Overall I don't know how you can call the Ovi era anything other than a success unless your baseline expectation was "80s Oilers dynasty in the cap world somehow."

I didnt intend to make it a competition. And I do see your point--although its the lack of even getting to the conf finals aside from the year they won it all that makes me really sour. I realize there are not dynasty type teams very often but it would have been nice to see a couple more teams have more serious runs even if they didnt get all the way there in the end.

Aside from that one year theyve just stumbled and bumbled as soon as they got to the second round, if that.

Close your eyes and picture the idea that your team is an even older franchise, has won no cups, never really appears in the playoffs and has never had a player even half as good or entertaining as Ovechkin. That is the hell in which Sabres and Canucks fans live. Be thankful for 2018.

Totally fair about not winning the Cup but you had Pavel fuckin' Bure on your team dude. And the Sabres had Hasek.

Mike Works posted:

Rangers or Penguins could theoretically make it to the SCF (you never know, especially considering Montreal and Dallas in the past 2 years), but watching a Rangers team whose star forwards generally aren't performing and whose MVP goalie has been average at best butt heads with a third string goalie and dead Sidney Crosby really feels like the winner will eventually lose to Florida or Carolina or whoever eventually, but good for them.

It's always possible Shesterkin will snap back to being dominant and drive the Rangers all the way to the Finals. But unless that happens the Bruins are going to win the East.

The Rangers haven't been impressive at all and that's putting it mildly. They lost three games out of four to a team with one line, a weak D corps and no goaltender. Well and good that fortuitous success at killing Crosby got them through the first round by the skin of their teeth, but unless Shesterkin reactivates god mode they're going to get crushed in the second round. It's been enough to make me rethink the high opinion I've had of Gallant.

Again, i am thankful for 2018 and its not intended to be a competition of whose career was wasted the worst or which team has it worst

Like since that 2018 theyve had *straight* first round exits.

Hockey is a game defined by losing and, between being repeatedly owned by the Crosby Penguins and that hilarious loss to the Habs, the Caps certainly have some very defining loser energy. It's easy to understand them as losers in the same way it's easy to understand those MacInnis-Pronger Blues teams as losers.

Like, at no point is anyone saying the Caps were bad. Some of those teams were really incredibly good, but that's part of what makes the loserness so felt.

Sometimes you just lose to the other best team in the league as well. I think from 2016 to 2018 the Pens and Caps were the two best teams in the league and the Pens won two of those matchups and the Caps one. Whoever won those series was gonna win the cup in each of those three years and that's how it played out. I think the Pens would have very likely threepeated if they got by the Caps and I'm pretty sure the Caps would have managed to beat San Jose or Nashville had they got by the Pens.

I get what you're saying but in hockey poo poo happens. The 2017 Pens may have been the best team in the league but they nevertheless came within one double overtime goal of losing to the loving Senators.

Honestly I still can't believe a team with that bad a D corps managed to win the Cup. Murray was awesome and the forward lines on that team were ridiculous.

Time for me to remind everyone that Nashville got hosed in game one on that offsides review specifically, and in my opinion a few calls like that were enough to tilt it to Pittsburgh.

No lie , I’m still very bitter about 2017 and it’s been 5+ years now.

but really, I (and I think all of RAS) enjoy watching Sid a lot and never had any hate for him. Letang? sure, he's a bitch rear end to play against. Guentzel? sure, looks weird, gently caress him. Cooke/Kunitz/Ruutu/the rest of the shitheads they've employed the past, sure.

In both cup runs Pittsburgh receiving extremely borderline coinflip questionable offside and goalie interference calls in their direction played a significant part in their winning.

With that said Tom Wilson was suspended for the rest of the series against Pittsburgh for a hit against Zach Aston Reese that wasn't even penalized then Wilson went on to get a primary assist on the game winner for that game. This is, of course, after blindsiding Pettersson in the prior game that both DoPs and refs shrugged at. So either you win via head shots you get away with or win via a bunch of decisions going your way the moral of the story is you need a bunch of luck to win a cup too.

You get away with the vast majority of head shots, so the right strategy is to take as many of them as you can.

I mean knocking Crosby out is huge. It literally turned a 4-1 series loss into a 4-3 series win. And as usual the refs and league office ruled it a Cool and Good Hockey Play. It's nuts not to be taking every possible opportunity to injure your opponent's best players, it has a gargantuan impact on winning in the playoffs that dwarfs everything else.

Running goalies should also be happening a lot more than it does, it's super easy to make look like an accident/the other guy's fault for pushing you, injuring goalies is pretty easy given how freakishly they're already contorting their bodies to begin with, and though it's likelier to get you a 2 minute vacation than an elbow to someone's head it's far less likely to get you a suspension.

The funny thing about the game tomorrow is I think it's tragic either way. Either the Penguins blow a 3-1 lead which has a certain level of tragedy to it despite the Penguins' injury trouble or the Rangers come all the way back to force a game 7 and then lose to a team they probably should have been able to beat in 5 or 6 given their injuries.
